LEGO Studio Build Sows the Seeds of Inspiration for Future Architects in New York

Paul Keskeys

After stealing the show at Architizer’s 2016 A+Awards gala last week, the iconic white bricks of the LEGO Architecture Studio set were in the spotlight again in New York on Saturday — this time inspiring a new generation of designers at the flagship LEGO store opposite the iconic Flatiron Building.

Students from Manhattan’s Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction teamed up with architects from BIG, SHoP Architects, Hollwich Kushner and Bernheimer Architecture to build a new galleria of NYC landmarks.

Members of these innovative architecture firms — all previous winners at the A+Awards — have either been LEGO builders in childhood or use LEGO bricks as a current design medium.

LEGO’s Architecture series aims to “celebrate the past, present and future of architecture through the LEGO brick,” and this special group of products has made a huge impact since its introduction in 2008.

Following the popular “Landmark” series, which includes LEGO versions of classics such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Sydney Opera House and the Empire State Building, the release of LEGO Architecture Studio allows you to create an icon to rival Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier or Oscar Neimeyer using over 1,200 custom bricks.
