Expo 2020 in Dubai is still four years away, but it’s already shaping up to be an architecture enthusiast’s buffet. Architizer has previously covered pavilion designs from OMA,BIG and Grimshaw, but now Santiago Calatrava has joined the party with his own remarkable proposal, which was recently approved for construction by the event’s organizers. Calatrava’s building beat out 11 other proposals to be chosen as the national pavilion of the United Arab Emirates.

The theme the UAE wants to emphasize in its national pavilion is “connecting minds, creating the future.” The notion of connection is encapsulated by the sculptural form of Calatrava’s building, which resembles a falcon drawing visitors under the fold of its mighty, protective wings.

“I am deeply honored that our practice has been chosen to design the national pavilion for Dubai Expo 2020, a project of national and global significance,”said Calatrava in a statement. “I am confident that the final design will be a symbol of the bold and daring spirit of the UAE, reflected in what is poised to be the most inclusive and global expo in history.”

The Falcon Pavilion will measure over 15,000 square meters (49,212 square feet) and will include exhibitions spaces as well as an auditorium and a lounge serving food and beverages. Calatrava’s team plans to use sustainable building practices as sustainability —  along with mobility and opportunity —  is one of the Expo’s three cardinal themes.
