Fireplaces have long been at the center of architecture. Providing a powerful aesthetic and style, fireplaces have transformed over time to move beyond primary concerns of light and warmth. With both gas and wood burning options, modern designs celebrate atmosphere and mood. They have become central elements that dramatically shape interior spaces.

Though gas fireplaces need to be carefully regulated and specified due to emissions concerns, manufacturers and designers are exploring new designs that provide exciting alternatives to traditional models. These range from in-wall and freestanding fireplaces to floating designs. Drawing from the Architizer database, we’ve rounded up a collection of gas fireplaces to help inspire you as you search for the perfect fit for your project.

Charles and Tika by Art Home Garden, New York, NY, United States

Fireline Automatic 3 & FLA 3 XL Fireplace by Planika Fires

Made to resonate with the surrounding brick-and-mortar panorama of the West Village, the Charles and Tika loft was made to transform solidity into light and air. The interior design features a palette of creamy neutral tones, as well as arrayed chenille and vintage velvet patterns. The contemporary urban loft features a custom marble gas fireplace integrated in an L-shaped sapele iron and copper bar.

The Fireline Automatic 3 & FLA 3 XL Fireplace design is a bio fireplace that can be controlled by a smart device through a Wi-Fi system. By carefully calibrating the gas flow, the fireplace allows natural flames to burn longer and at varied levels. The extra-large fuel tank combines with two different casing types to allow for different design configurations and options. The design can be used in both commercial and residential projects alike.

Butterfly House by Surfacedesign, Inc, San Francisco, CA, United States

Gas Fireplace by Black Diamond

The Butterfly House makes use of a courtyard garden in its design to “extend the scale and materiality of the house to the outside.” At the very heart of the space is a great hearth incased in white concrete, one that surrounded by ceramic planters, limestone paving, concrete walls and a variety of vegetation.

The design showcases how a gas fireplace can be designed outdoors as part of a larger garden or tranquil space. The Black Diamond gas model was organized as a linear line offset by an inlaid black basalt fountain wall. The hearth becomes the center point of the courtyard taking cues from Japanese gardens with a series of horizontal planes. The abstract composition of white concrete was made to contrast the black fire pit.

Apartment in Pastels by Interno, Bydgoszcz, Poland

PrimeFire by Planika Fires

Located in the Atrium Park complex in Bydgoszcz, Poland, this apartment was designed as a turn-key project. Combining Italian, Spanish and Scandinavian design, the project was conceptually organized around the idea of an “open space.” The kitchen and living room were made from an annex and two rooms, while the rest of the area was left for the bedroom and bathroom, a small office and a laundry space. The interiors focus on warm colors, natural materials and pastel highlights.

Designed as an advanced ethanol fireplace, Planika Fires’s PrimeFire model was made to form a straight, long line of fire. Creating the ambience of real flames in the contemporary interior, the gas fireplace can also be connected to smart devices and be controlled by the push of a button. The PrimeFire is certified by OMNI and ideal for private residences. Advanced technology combines with safety features, comfort and warmth to provide an elegant gas fireplace solution for your home.

Green Elephant by Azovskiy + Pahomova, Dnipro, Ukraine

Fireline Automatic 3 & FLA 3 XL Fireplace by Planika Fires

Designed as a modern apartment for a young family, the Green Elephant focuses on the details. From layout and finishing to unique wall colors and shades, the design divided into several functional areas: a common rest area with a dining room, a kitchen, a master bedroom with a bathroom and a children’s area, which includes two separate rooms and a bathroom. Natural materials were used throughout the project, while the Planika fireplace separates the rest area from the hall and provides a dynamic central element and material palette.

Like the Charles and Tika apartment, the Fireline Automatic 3 & FLA 3 XL Fireplace design used in the Green Elephant is also a bio fireplace that can be controlled by a smart device through a Wi-Fi system. With a similar calibrated flow, the fireplace burns longer and at varied levels. The difference here is that instead of being anchored to a wall, the gas fireplace is part of a “floating” concept as its own freestanding element in the living space.

Izel by WA International, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Fireline Automatic 3 & FLA 3 XL Fireplace by Planika Fires

Formed around the design concept of an ancient Mayan goddess, Izel is a Latin American restaurant in Dubai. Diversity is reflected throughout the venue, from gold, black marble & dark wood interiors to feature walls with Maya hieroglyphics in gold leaf. Sculptures & object d’art were recreated according to their archetypes & depict the gods & deities of this ancient civilization. Spanish inspired lace & mantillas are reflected in the detailing of the concrete screens at the bar, while domed ceiling lights & fabric patterns where used to layer the concept.

This Planika fireplace takes the shape of a spectacular noir marble-clad fire with a large Aztec stone calendar dedicated to the sun goddess. The bio fireplace is also controlled by a smart device through a Wi-Fi system, and like the other Fireline models, burns longer and at varied levels with a calibrated flow. Designed to reflect the Aztecs’ understanding of time & space, and inspired by the fire temples & sacred places, the fireplace was made to recall an ancient temple.
