From residential settings to hospitality venues and even healthcare facilities, the barn door trend is here to stay and with good reason: “One sliding door can save up to 20 square feet of floor space compared to a typical swing door,” says Tom Gross, owner of Redondo Beach, Calif.-based Specialty Doors. But, let’s face it, the exposed track hardware above a doorway also has aesthetic appeal, whether farmhouse rustic or industrial chic in style.

Specialty Doors

While Gross’s business has provided and installed some serious, high-performance products — such as acoustic elephant doors at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch — its bestselling product line is the flat-track barn door hardware. “It’s available in a wide choice of finishes and is budget-friendly, starting at around $200.” Additionally, his company designs custom barn-door hardware systems to create sliding bookcases, walls, and security enclosures. “Since the advent of flatscreen television, we’re also seeing our hardware used with art pieces to cover wall-mounted TVs,” he says. “There is no limit to the variety of applications.”

Krownlab’s Ragnar

Ragnar and Oden by Krownlab

The refined Ragnar features a black or brushed stainless steel flat track that can be cut and drilled with common tools for easy and quick field adjustability. While the track conceals its fasteners and leveling system, the bearings are exposed to create a striking detail.

Krownlab’s Oden (also shown at top)

Oden makes a bold statement by offering the trolley-bearing seals, trolley stops, and track end caps in accent colors. The hardware can be specified in brushed, polished, or black stainless or a warm bamboo. Both systems can support wood or glass doors of 300 to 400 pounds, 3/8-inch to two inches thick depending on mounting style (top, face, or glass mount).
