The competition entry for the annually Schinkel Architecture Prize in 2009 was awarded first prize among 154 entries. The brief asked to design a progressive housing structure that respects the medieval architecture of the city as well as the unique landscape within the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, located in the north-eastern part of Germany. In order to create a counter project to typical sprawl-architecture, the design proposes a highly densified housing structure consisting of 54 single houses within a clear rectangular shape. At the intersection of urban density and individual lifestyle the project explores a new form of housing. The jury wrote: “The design proposal takes a clear position in favor of diversity and density ... Its conceptual clarity and its high design qualities make the project the most remarkable one of all entries.” Additional information on the competition and the other projects can be found online: www.aiv-berlin.de.
