The Stillfold House was conceived in response to a growing disconnect between residential design and everyday living. In an era where homes are increasingly shaped by visual impact and short-lived trends, the project sought to return architecture to a quieter role, one that supports life rather than competes for attention.
The brief was not to create a statement residence, but a home that would remain relevant over time. Calm, comfort, and continuity were prioritised over novelty, with an emphasis on spaces that feel intuitive to occupy and effortless to live in.
The living room forms the emotional anchor of the house. Rather than functioning as a formal showcase, it was designed as a space of continuity accommodating long conversations, informal gatherings, and moments of pause. Spatial planning favours softness and flow over rigid geometry, allowing the room to be experienced without hierarchy.
Curved seating establishes an organic centre within the space. This decision was behavioural rather than decorative, shaping how people gather and move through the room. The absence of rigid alignment allows interaction to unfold naturally, reinforcing the room’s role as a shared living environment.
Architectural wall panelling introduces rhythm and order while remaining visually restrained. The neutral base palette allows light, proportion, and material texture to define the atmosphere. By avoiding excessive surface articulation, the design ensures longevity and visual calm.
Light is treated as a spatial material. Daylight enters the living room in a diffused manner, softening surfaces throughout the day. As evening approaches, artificial lighting transitions gradually, cove lighting defines the ceiling plane, a suspended chandelier anchors the space without dominance, and accent lighting maintains visual comfort. The lighting strategy avoids contrast-driven drama in favour of continuity.
Material selection follows the same principle of restraint. Natural wood flooring provides warmth and grounding, while tactile upholstery and handcrafted elements introduce subtle variation. Each material is chosen for durability and ageing, allowing the space to evolve gracefully with use.
The design intentionally avoids trend-led materials, excessive ornamentation, and rigid symmetry. Instead, proportion, light, and material honesty are allowed to shape the character of the space.
Throughout the project, architecture and interiors are developed as a single, integrated system. Layout, lighting, and materiality are inseparable decisions rather than layered additions. This approach allows the house to feel composed without appearing over-designed.
The Stillfold House reflects Neomen’s design philosophy, architecture that listens before it speaks. Designed to evolve quietly with its inhabitants, the project prioritises longevity over novelty, allowing everyday life to remain at the centre of the spatial experience.
