Steelcase’s WorkLife program comprises two essential types of customer space – the office and workspace showroom, and the supporting hospitality elements. Our approach was to develop a series of thresholds between these two space types using material contrasts, immersive color, and ambient sound. Within the existing orthogonal frame of the existing building, a series of crossing diagonal datums established the geometric basis for new walls, rooms, and the thresholds between them.
The experience of these thresholds is enhanced by the tension of exceptionally thin opaque and translucent walls (1/2” steel and glass) framing both glazed and open passages, contrasted with the coherence of immersive color. The thresholds increase in complexity, blending space and material and culminating in a new stair creates defining a vertical threshold between floors, structured from the same steel plate, glass, and felt elements.
