In today’s modern times, homes are
more than expressions of tradition, culture and place, but also statements of
aspiration and change. They reflect places, people, experiences that have
crossed in this ever-shrinking global world. This house for a family of two
generations layers all these elements into a canvas that is classical in
sentiment and modern in articulation. The house has all elements of
contemporary living, with technology working silently behind.
There has been a deliberate
attempt to integrate craft in the process of space making and articulation of
elements that define the character of the space. They have been drawn from the
Indian subcontinent, and also from the larger south asian region. These include
intricate Balinese stone craft, furniture inlayed with stone, mother of pearl,
brass from the Northern India, cane work from Thailand, inlaid granite with
ceramic and brass, honed and crafted stone work from South Tamil Nadu.
This house uses advanced
technology as its backbone for running its background systems. The
Air-conditioning is a centralized VRF system integrated into an automation
system that controls the lighting and mechanical systems as a central module.
This allows control of the entire house from a centralized touch screen panel.
The house also integrates a state
of art hydro-pneumatic system and an advanced electronic surveillance system.
This ‘Contemporary Classic’ house
is a statement of modern living in an ever changing ever shrinking global
scenario, drawing its roots from traditional crafts and tools of space making
in a specific context, also aided by modern tools of technology. In broader
terms this is a home in its place for today and the future.
