“Rise of the Dragon” is an outdoor public installation art located at Kwai Chai Hong, Kuala Lumpur during Chinese New Year 2024. The installation is inspired by the act of ‘reshuffling’ (‘洗牌’) of mahjong tiles that symbolises a fresh beginning, aligning with the essence of embracing a new chapter during Chinese New Year, particularly in the Year of the Dragon.
For the Malaysian-born architectural designers Jia Min Wong and Chaer Shean Lee of Plus+Plus, mahjong holds deep personal significance: it evokes cherished childhood memories, where the sound of “reshuffling” mahjong tiles and laughter fill the halls every Chinese New Year. Beyond being nostalgic, Mahjong serves as a game to reunite and foster communication among families of multiple generations especially within the Chinese community, where Chinese New Year emphasizes the importance of reunion.
The site of the installation, "Kwai Chai Hong," is located in a historically significant area for Malaysian Chinese community in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The "Rise of the Dragon" installation injects new vitality and attention into this area, becoming a major highlight during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Kuala Lumpur in 2024.
The unique and fluid movement of reshuffling the tiles in the game to reset every round, which imitates the slithering movement of a Dragon, awake from its long slumber. The rising dragon flying from the mahjong table towards the entrance of Kwai Chai Hong represents the legendary creature who has gathered enough vitality to soar the skies out bringing prosperity, joy, hope and luck to the community.
The choice of materials include of three main elements; acrylic for the mahjong panels, wire mesh as fluid body representing the spirit of the dragon, while bamboo serves as the primary structure of the installation. The durability and visual impact of these materials make them ideal choices, seamlessly integrating with the mural art along the wall and the cultural heritage of the back alley.
