The owners had lived on the site in a 1930’s cottage for the past 26 years, the cottage was beyond repair however the site had grown up around it.
In order to take advantage of the existing established planting, the new house was designed in a similar position to the cottage, incorporating the original large concrete water tank.
The house opens up to views to the east (sea) and west (garden). Neighbouring properties to the north and south are intentionally “blinkered”. High level windows to the north bring winter sun into the living spaces and onto the exposed concrete slab and concrete block walls
Materials have been chosen for their inherent texture, colour, and robustness, as well as thermal mass benefits. Very little paint has been used throughout the project. Internal finishes consist of Steel floated concrete, concrete block, band sawn cedar, through coloured white fibre cement sheet and plywood, all left natural or clear sealed
