Challenge to the status quo by ÖÖD in Ghana, Africa
ÖÖD mirror house inspires people to celebrate the beauty of any landscape through a game of reflections. Reflections so intriguing and playful that the house is well able to turn any setting into a place of admiration and awe, and even the most serious type of person into a small child, even if just for a brief moment. Nobody can resist the ultimate temptation of wonder that a mirror house produces in the nature, cunningly disappearing yet standing out.
Inspired by passion for the outdoors, ÖÖD mirror house that fits perfectly with the cool Nordic setting was taking on the many challenges of its next destination in Ghana, Africa, with unusual conditions, habits and traditions. The pilot project of one hotel room before the signing of the whole hotel complex serving as a test that ÖÖD was able to pass with flying colors.
ÖÖD features Nordic minimalism at its purest form with clean lines and open flow of movement. Long winters and limited light have for decades been the inspiration for Nordic minimalism and northern people who experience dark, cold winters and bright summers have grown into architecture that has been shaped by challenges posed by such conditions. Indoors life style of the North is a result of the weather and calls for bright and livable interiors with large windows and elements of nature brought inside.
So how does such a Nordic house come across in Ghana, Africa?
The main style elements of architecture like form, method of construction, building materials and regional character surely get challenged when combining the Nordic house with a traditional Ghanaian fisherman’s village setting. Nothing even slightly resembles the mud and concrete that the traditions of housing have brought to the present.
ÖÖD perfectly melts into any surrounding, presenting less of a challenge and resistance and more of a cooperation and partnership with the neighboring environment. While being present in 14 countries all over the world and mostly boasting with the characteristics of being a great chameleon, vanishing, disappearing and melting, the ÖÖD hotel complex in Ghana is a true game changer, thus challenging the status quo and getting people excited and curious.
Nordic people seek to stay indoors most of the year. So, a house like ÖÖD with magnificent views to the different moods of nature is a natural choice.
In Ghana, on the other hand, the symbiosis between the elements of the North and the reality of the South with the palm trees, old fishermen’s boats, local architecture, and the beautifully tempting and soothing ocean surely manages to convey a surreal effect.
The cooperation to build the hotel complex started already in 2017. Brothers Bernard and Steve approached ÖÖD at UK Construction Week Trade Show in Birmingham with the idea of finding a unique hotel for their business idea in Ghana. Brothers Andreas and Jaak were showcasing their new business venture ÖÖD, a unique hotel concept that was born in 2016 in Estonia, at their very first trade show. Little did they know that their meeting will realize as a project of five hotel units not sooner than in two years’ time. The understanding that they were all brothers managing their businesses together was a great ice-breaker at the time.
If the house in the trade show left some doubts in the air for the Ghana-born brothers, then after seeing ÖÖD in its natural setting made all doubts disappear. The visit to Estonia to meet the factory, the ÖÖD team, and the house in the midst of nature was fruitful, and the brothers were instantly able to visualize the game of the mirror-glass with palm trees on the beach in Anomabo. Although they were hesitant that ÖÖD as such a strong structure can be put up in the conditions of heat, humidity, scarce electricity, and lack of equipment on the far beach in Central Africa, they knew ÖÖD would be a perfect match for their business plan. They took on the promise of the Estonian-born brothers that they can do it.
Built primarily from steel, insulated glass, and thermally treated wood, the small hotel offers a compact but comfortable 200 square feet space composed of a bed, a small living area, a kitchenette and a bathroom while still managing to seem airy and spacious.
The visitors can enjoy the privacy behind the house’s mirrored exterior, which helps to hide the house into the landscape and enjoy the views through its wraparound glass windows, offering an escape from the heat while being magically in touch with the surroundings.
The structure comes with an A/C and considering the small area that needs to be treated, the pod doesn’t take much. The pod is good at staying cool thanks to its special mirror-glass that reflects back 97% of direct sunlight.
ÖÖD as a small house solution that has been designed and developed for hosting purposes is meant to be used year-round in cold as well as hot climates. The 200 square feet steel structure and the use of premium materials surely withstands the test of time. The house is easily movable and relocatable and can be shipped turnkey as well as flat-packed, making ÖÖD a perfect house to pop up anywhere.
ÖÖD plans to challenge so much more. Already on 21-23 January, 2020, ÖÖD is participating in NAHB IBS2020 in Las Vegas.
