The studio collaborated with Snøhetta on the exhibition design of Nordic Models + Common Ground and its twelve display units. The exhibition launched at The Scandinavia House in New York as part of the American Scandinavian Foundation’s 100-year celebration. The structures’ design responds to the provision that the exhibit will travel to 6 additional locations across America. Starting with folding studies in various media, the studio and Snøhetta developed a living hinge system, inserting hi-density polyethylene (HDPE) into plywood. Fabricated in-house, the structures unfold and pack flat, minimizing transit costs.
When folded for display on site, the lacquered birch exteriors starkly contrast the solid sky-blue interior finish, evoking the quintessential Scandinavian landscape of warm woods set within clean cool air. The system’s upright and tabletop surfaces display both two and three dimensional works by more than 35 Scandinavian designers and artists. Curated by Snøhetta, the show explores the possibilities in design innovation through open artistic and cultural exchange.
