by Edyta Skiba & Cristian Ortega Munoz | competition project | MODERN LODZ TENEMENT HOUSE |
Multifamily housing functional and spatial organisation results from the historical development of XIXth century tenement houses typical for Lodz as well as contemporary urban design. The building is not only a space to live, it is also a meeting place and culture sharing, between citizens. The main goal was to support and strengthen the relations between neighbours.
In the ground floor we proposed two community rooms which could be used in accordance to the needs of inhabitants. One of the could be used as a seniors club, and could held such events as yoga classes or chess tournaments. Second one could be used for youth club. It could be also used for parties organised by the inhabitants. In the front part, overlooking the street, we located the cafeteria, which could be run by street worker or some cultural organisation.
Like other cities Lodz, struggles not only with social problems, it also have a lot of ecological problems. Smog, heat island effect, food desert are those of biggest importance. Thus we introduced an vertical farm based on hydroponic methodology of growing plants. It not only cleans the air, cools the temperatures in the summer time but also gives food independence to the people. What is more, taking care of plants helps to create stronger bonds between the exact place and its inhabitants. Food produced on the vertical farm could be sold or could be used in the private household.
By hiding garage in the basement we could create an attractive public-private space space.
The shape of the building corresponds with its historical archetype, as well as precise sun and shade analysis. In the front facade we preserved the seven axis division, stressing vertical directions by movable concrete and steel panels and counterbalancing them with the horizontal directions marked by the railings.
Concrete plates are notched to mark the proportions and levels of ledges above and under windows. Steel panels are perforated what allows not only sun penetration but what is more important it lets people to observe life from theirs apartment and being unseen in the same time. Panels could be moved so facades are changing within moment of the day and season.
