MIKKAICHI LABO is a shared office space. It was once a 2-story residence that has since been completely renovated.
The architects in charge, Design Office SUKIMONO, is based in Gotsu, Shimane. They are known for their custom furniture and interior renovations that embrace renewable design through the repurposing of old materials. Many of their projects are in the rural areas of Japan, which is now undergoing severe depopulation. Many old houses are now abandoned and face dilapidation. Such was the case for this aging building located in Unnan.
Furniture within the share office, including the Desks, Hanging Lights, and Shelves were constructed from the wood of the old floorboard. The carpet tiles are hand-dyed with traditional indigo-dying techniques. The wooden screens (shoji) and the wooden lockers were both refurbished.
Through this new modern and minimalist design, the richness of these old materials can be presented in a new light. This new modern design not only carries the physical value of materials that are aged hundreds of years, but also carries with it traditional Japanese values of simplicity and material honesty.
