Russian architect Maria Novozhilova has designed a furniture piece out of recycled solid wood.
A strong desire to avoid a standard impersonal solution pushed the designer to realize a customized site-specific object precisely measured to store certain gadgets such as record player, vinyl records, music speakers, play station and so on.
Unlike the modern trend to minimize the impact of the object trying immaterialize both quantity and quality of material, the designer’s intent was to emphasize the presence and materiality of the stand and through that narrating the quality of the wood: its color, texture, pattern of nodes and grains, and smell. Here comes the name of the piece “MaSegno” – an Italian word that evokes an idea of material heaviness, naturalness and roughness.
Designer’s overall idea, in fact, is a solid-looking single piece assembled from several coarse massive wooden components.
Although the furniture might appear like a bulky figure where material prevails over apparently few random storage niches, it has been actually accurately measured and calculated and, therefore, it is capable to contain all required items. Besides visible rare openings, this large solid offers hidden slots for wires, all the necessary space for concealed wall outlets, and even some secret pockets: all located on the back side and for this reason completely invisible from the front, top and lateral views.
At the end of the assembly process, wood was left natural: basically with no special treatment. Therefore, the furniture works not only as a storage support. It also energize the air bringing fresh note of a pine tree perfume, bringing back a touch of nature into a Milanese apartment.
