A stairway to a California basement was the challenge with this project. Where it was located not only blocked the view to the backyard, but it alienated the breakfast room from everywhere else and narrowed the working area for the laundry space adjacent to the kitchen. By removing the walls and installing a trap door in the floor, the space could be opened up, allowing for bi-fold doors to the exterior living space, and access and views from all points of the room.
