It weighs 1200 tons. But the new office of Fuchs Technology AG in Meissenheim appears weightless to observers. The 4500 m3 building floats on four conical columns about five metres above the ground. Approximately 40 work stations are housed in the 900-square metre space.
The circular ground floor between the four supports houses the reception and a glass elevator. The next floor will hold offices and conference rooms, while the upper floor is envisioned as a meeting point and space for executives.
The unusual shape of the building is made possible by a supporting framework of steel. “Fuchs Technology is active worldwide in improving equipment and methods for steel production, using cutting-edge innovative practices,” says Jürgen Grossmann. “The design of the building expresses the corporate identity of such a high-tech company. At the same time, it emphasizes the form and function of steel.”
For the façade, Grossman combines mirrored glass and brushed aluminium. This motif also reinforces the innovative character of the new building along with the energized concept.
A heat pump, supplied by a groundwater connection, handles heating and cooling of the building. Climate control of the offices utilizes a modern in-floor heating system. As such, the building also sets the standard for energy and environmental solutions.
