The Fola subsidized housing complex is situated in Sesto San Giovanni, just north of Milan, and is part of an urban renewal plan that involves the entire surrounding area. The context in which the building is set recounts the industrial origins of the development of Sesto, which for years was northern Italy’s most important centre of steel production, abandoned in the early 1990s and now the object of urban and territorial requalification.The main goal of the solutions proposed by the project is to realize a high-quality building with an economical budget. The choice of certain materials, such as wood for the facing and metal for the parapets and sliding blinds, along with technological solutions such as thermally insulated facing, plywood window and door frames and the high breathability of the façade were determinant in both giving the building a contemporary character and ensuring energy efficiency. The project seeks a close dialogue with the design of the new public spaces by creating pedestrian walkways that connect with the nearby green areas. The building, with its distinctive C-shape floor plan, has five floors – four above ground and one below. The two lateral wings form an internal plaza that serves as the main site of encounter and leisure for the inhabitants as well as the principal access to the nearby green spaces. The paving of the ground floor extends outside the building and into the plaza, creating a continuity between indoors and outdoors. The main façade is 48 metres long, its rhythm defined by the passage to the internal plaza and by the vertical strips containing the windows and sliding metal blinds. The internal façade is articulated by the glass-sheathed stairways, the loggias and balconies and the distinctive wood panel facing. The top floor is recessed with respect to those below, and the continuous roof that runs the entire perimeter of the building protects the terraces thus formed. The technological solutions applied here are simple but effective for ensuring maximum environmental quality for every apartment.
