THE SITELocated in a rural region of Veraguas, Panama, the smallfarming community of Granja San Jose Arriba sits gracefullyatop the vast mountainous Panamanian landscape. Approx.220 miles north-west of Panama city, the site of the existingfarmhouse offers beautiful views of the valley and river below.THE PROBLEMSince 2007, strong northern winds have devastated the farmdestroying crops and weakening structures in the area. Lookingto help the local farmers achieve a level of production thatwould guarantee an adequate daily food intake for members ofthe community, Patronato de Nutricion, a local NGO, turned toUSC’s Global Architecture Brigades for help.THE SOLUTIONUsing local materials, including several types of indigenouswoods, river rocks, and native cane, we designed and built afarmhouse that not only protected the property from the harshweather conditions, but also offered the best solution based onthe community’s specific needs.
