Centre for Climate Change The city of
Delhi is growing exponentially and so are its complexities. In its complexity
and race for sustenance critical issues of climate change which have put
humanity into threat are taking a back step.
For the sake of
our own existence the city needs to recognize and spread awareness about the
issues and means to deal with climate change, in which science plays the
foremost role. Thus we propose a science exhibition center for Climate change
in the vicinity of the site.
Laxmi Nagar District CentreThe District
centers in Delhi are designed to serve a population of around 5,00,000 and a number of such district centers are
proposed and built in various precincts. The objective is to reach masses and
demonstrate the ideas of sustainability and its application in a more practical
way. Hence a district center is chosen as it relates to the local population
more intricately than any other building.
The District
center is designed to serve at three hierarchical levels of firstly city, secondly
the precinct and lastly at the local site level. At the city level the design
demonstrates the use of non-conventional sources of energy and their
integration into designing process. At the precinct level the energy produced
from the district center in surplus is transferred to the grid as a backup for
the power cut in the area. Lastly at the grass root level of site level it
tries to release the pressure off the neighboring high density area by
providing open green plazas and recreation spaces-a much needed requirement of
the area.
The design
vocabulary of the district center consists of solar towers, parabolic
reflectors, photovoltaic, piezoelectric walkways, large plazas, open greens, latticed screens
(jaalis), shaded walkways, solar trees, wind turbines and bio waste energy
generation plant.
The parabolic
reflectors mounted on the roof of buildings concentrate solar light to the
solar tower in the center of plazas where in turn the water is heated to steam
and used to run turbines to produce energy.
The photovoltaic shading devices are planted in green open spaces
serving the dual function of a shading device as well as producing energy. The
bio-mass plant also uses the wastes produced from the neighboring areas to
generate substantial amount of perennial energy. Piezoelectric crystals are
infused into pavement block so as to collect energy from the high footfall on
the site. The energy though less in comparison to other source but still
substantial would be used for outdoor lighting of footpath on the site.Ethical Standards and Social Equity
The site is Located at East of Delhi.
Huge disparity in Population Density is visible on two sides of the site. The
District Centre is designed to bridge the gap and provide a fair platform for
social interaction. Also the Functions of this District Centre involves
some Low cost Housing which will be serving to the people migrating towards
Delhi and seeking Job. The District Centre itself has a lot of functions like
Waste Management for Precinct, management of Energy Generation and also
Commercial Spaces which offers jobs to the Migrants.Ecological Quality and Energy
Conservation
Since there are no open spaces and trees
in the neighborhood, so Existing Trees on the site are conserved and also more
green spaces are created to enhance the ecology of the Precinct. The whole
vision of this District Centre revolves
around Producing and Conserving Energy. The strategy followed is to create
spaces which consumes less energy with natural ventilation and Passive cooling.
N-S orientation to have maximum light in the Office areas and Minimum heat
gain.Contextual and Aesthetic Impact
Since the neighboring areas are low rise,
to respond to the context, most of the function are kept low rise. Office
building reaches the maximum height of 12 storeys. The design rises gradually from all the
sides towards the center to maintain the harmony of context and gives a visual
appeal to the neighborhood dwellers.
Since the maximum number of visitor of this place are coming from the
Metro Station, The design is developed to welcome with physical connection and
maintain a visual contact with all the visitors.
