The swimming centre “Balneum” in Vipiteno, near Bozen, was built on the site of the old swimming pool of the ’70s, which was demolished. One of the main issues in the building design was to make users fully “savour” the surrounding landscape. On the south-west side the building features large glazed walls that provide beautiful views of the mountains.Through the glazed entrance and the horizontal windows on the north façade it is possible to perceive the movement of the people inside the building. On the higher floor users can access a large terrace both from the sauna and from the relaxation area. The sauna area covers around 1120 sq m in total.Warm colours combined with a linear and defined architecture characterise the interior of the building. All the different spaces have an essential image yet without looking ordinary.Great attention was devoted to the acoustic issue. The building includes two levels, both with easy access by all.The main access is on the north-west corner of the building and can be directly accessed from the car park and the street. The access hall functions as distribution area: users pass through the reception area and reach the changing rooms, which serve both the swimming pool and the sauna. From the access hall non-users can reach the “bar bistro”.The restoration area serves both the indoor and, through the bordering terrace, the outdoor pools. It includes two dining rooms and is equipped with kitchen, store rooms and toilets.Changing rooms and showers have been disposed on a unique level and other separate changing rooms have been provided for handicapped people. From the changing rooms and the toilets users can directly access the swimming pool and the sauna. The water surface covers a total area of 467.47 sq m and includes:- a 200 sq m swimming pool- a 151.99 sq m leisure pool, made up of a combination of several pools equipped with hydromassage beds, channels with current water and cervical message jets, spa pool- a 44.53 sq m baby pool- a 70.95 sq m outdoor pool. The outdoor pool area includes a new 45.00 sq m baby pool and the existing 500 sq m swimming pool, accessible in summer. In addition to the relaxation areas and the circulation space around the pools, the facility includes a lifeguard’s control room, different store rooms, medical room directly connected to the entrance hall and a rescue vehicle access area. The new sauna area located at first level is characterised by a functional layout of the single rooms and by wide circulation spaces that partly extend on the roof of the indoor pool. The almost entirely glazed façade on south-west provides a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding mountain landscape. The mixed use sauna has a capacity of 100 people. Users can choose among four different kinds of sauna (three indoor cabins and one outdoor Finnish sauna), a wide Kneipp shower area, a cooling grotto, a café-bar provided with dining room and lounge, several relaxation and resting rooms, a beauty area with solarium and three massage cabins and a large terrace with cold water pool and spa pool. All the technical plants and other store rooms are located at basement level.
