This piece re-visits the mantle as an element of interior affects related to the fireplace as the family center and activates it as a thick, textural, and contemporarily ornate surface. The upper (and dislocated) mantle was designed in such a way as to capitalize on the tooling of the CNC machine and create an interplay between three masses acting as one and that appear to be slowly slumping under the pull of gravity while simultaneously being weightless and lifted by the rising heat of the fire’s warmth. The tool paths of the CNC machine amplify these effects embedded in the geometry and mass, reading as governed by a gravitation pull which is at odds with the rising of hot air. The tool paths add depth and softness while either cataloging the topography of the parent surface or counter it to provide a ‘synthetic grain’ of more rapid movements. As a whole, the dual mantel provides a volumetric, thickened element embedded with reflection, softness, and contemporarily ornate tool marks. The fireplace and surround were also part of the renovation and incorporated into the overall patterning of color, texture, and light. This mantle was CNC milled from 4 laminated layers of ¾” MDF measuring 6’-0” x 3’-0” x 3” and finished with white Appliance Epoxy and secured with a 2x6 cleat. The fireplace is new as is the 3cm Polar White Marble surround and bench.
