The site of this project is located in the Potomac region of Maryland. It is a densely wooded site with an extreme natural topography that leads to the shores of Potomac River. Combined with forest conservation limitations, storm water management requirements, and existing right of way restrictions, this extreme and dramatic site demanded an unconventional approach to the design of the residence.
The main massing of the building is a square doughnut with an open square courtyard at its center. Long span steel trusses on all four sides form the structure of this square, allowing it to float over the existing site with minimal vertical supports. This mass is elevated above ground allowing for panoramic views upon approaching of the house. The proposed scheme aims at minimizing site disturbance by minimizing the extent of sub-grade structure. Parking garage is located blow grade and accessed via a ramp The extent of build-out on the ground level is also limited to an all glass entry lobby with vertical circulation elements connecting the residential floor to the garage.
The square plan of the residential floor is divided to four sections: two sides are dedicated to the family and in-law bed-rooms, one side dedicated to a guest suite and the forth side is dedicated to all shared spaces. This forth side overlooks the river.
The roof is a single contiguous in-ward slopping metal roof. it is designed with future solar panels in mind.
