Given that it is those people who will ultimately inhabit and live with the structures we create, what right do we have to tell them what\u2019s good for them? Is our lengthy architectural education enough to negate their lay perspective, assuming they will trust in our professional judgment, specialist knowledge, and theoretical standpoints? Do we really know best?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the optimists among us will be confident that our thorough education and subsequent years of professional experience puts architects in the best position possible to shape the built environment for the benefit of society. However, simply producing great designs is not enough. The clear communication of these concepts is critical to winning the support of our clients, local residents, city councils, and the public at large.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/zaha-hadid-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zaha Hadid<\/a>\u2019s loss of the 2020 Olympic Stadium commission in Tokyo was a notable example of what can happen if we fail to convince each and every one of these influential parties. On the flip side, the collaborative effort undertaken by <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/james-corner-field-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Corner Field Operations<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/diller-scofidio-renfro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diller Scofidio + Renfro<\/a> to realize the <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/high-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Line<\/a> goes to show how popular a project can become with the help of ongoing dialogue and input from the local community.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can architects do to enhance their powers of persuasion? A great example is the graphic sequence used to explain the pyramidal shape of the <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/west-57th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West 57th apartment building<\/a> in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>By now, you will no doubt have seen at least one of the studio\u2019s step-by-step model manipulations. The simple, <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/10-tips-and-tricks-for-success-in-sketchup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sketchup-style<\/a> renderings are easy to understand, giving clients and the wider public a clear idea of BIG\u2019s project development. Models by <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/richard-meier-partners-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Meier and Partners<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>We recently reported on <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/how-architecture-is-born\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the power of models<\/a> to bring design concepts to life, as <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/allied-works-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allied Works Architecture<\/a> prepare to display theirs for all to see in a major new exhibition in Denver. Another firm to harness three dimensions more than most is Richard Meier and Partners, which now has an entire museum dedicated to models of some of its most famous creations, including detailed renditions of the iconic <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/neugebauer-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neugebauer Residence<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/smith-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith House<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By allowing people to <b>get up close and personal<\/b> to these finely crafted works of timber veneer, Meier gives everyone a chance to get under the proverbial skin of each project, and it is safe to say that the clients are much more swiftly convinced of an architect\u2019s intentions when they lay their eyes on these miniature masterpieces.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d_rcq0_Rg2I?list=PLiVjfcIJ1aFNR33cyJWaWuWsv2EVAWGQZ\" width=\"713\" height=\"410\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Europa City walkthrough by Squint\/Opera.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>3. Visualizations by <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/squint-opera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Squint\/Opera<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>They aren\u2019t architects themselves, but they have quickly become indispensable to major firms around the globe with their brand of unique and often breathtaking animations of the buildings we envision. Squint\/Opera\u2019s team of digital artists create quirky architectural trailers and stills that have that rare ability to make clients smile, a fact that has spawned great success: people buy into big ideas much more easily when they are enjoying themselves!<\/p>\n<p>The principle is encapsulated by the Squint\/Opera\u2019s tagline: \u201c<b>Great Stories Told Well<\/b>.\u201d Firms that have benefited from the studio\u2019s animated box of tricks include the aforementioned <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/big-bjarke-ingels-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIG<\/a>, designers of the utopian <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/europa-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europa City<\/a> on the outskirts of Paris, and international players <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/aecom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AECOM<\/a>, which tapped Squint\/Opera to bring its <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/rio-2016-olympic-park-masterplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rio 2016 Olympic Park<\/a> masterplan to life.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oXbhTHaMwTw\" width=\"713\" height=\"410\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Thomas Heatherwick: Building the Seed Cathedral, via TED.<\/i><\/p>\n<h2>4. Presentations by <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/heatherwick-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heatherwick Studio<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Sure, not every architect is going to rise to such prominence that they can book themselves a slot on the prestigious TED stage, but Thomas Heatherwick\u2019s talk illustrates the potential for multimedia presentations to help tell stories and communicate our ideas to both clients and the wider world. The list of TED speakers from the architectural world is quite something: <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/gehry-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frank Gehry<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/studio-daniel-libeskind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Libeskind<\/a>, and Architizer\u2019s own Marc Kushner of <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/hwkn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HWKN<\/a> have all taken to the platform in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of event matters not, though: even in a meeting with developers or the board at your local town hall, these same communication skills can help support your designs. By talking with passion and enthusiasm about your project, you can <b>show genuine belief<\/b> in what you are proposing. Social Media by <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/malone-maxwell-borson-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malone Maxwell Borson Architects<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Most architects still use Facebook and Twitter to broadcast factual news about their firms. That\u2019s just fine, but Bob Borson of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifeofanarchitect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Life of an Architect<\/a>\u201d fame has shown that we can do so much more to communicate our working process and concepts to clients and a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p>Circa multiple online platforms, Bob paints a <b>detailed picture of studio life<\/b>, offering thoughts on everything from conceptual sketching techniques to real-world design details. Critic Alexandra Lange nailed it in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2014\/01\/07\/opinion-alexandra-lange-on-how-architects-should-use-social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her article<\/a> on Dezeen last year, proclaiming: \u201cSocial media can do more for architecture than showcase pretty faces and soundbites.
