Limitations, however, have a funny way of resulting in some of the most creative designs. Such was the case for the recent transformation of a 1950s-era fire station into a new office for the engineering firm Interpres Building Solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acting as both client and lead design engineer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpresbuild.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interpres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was inspired to move into the vacant firehouse in Springfield, Missouri, due to its striking aesthetics with simple lines. \u201cI\u2019d always noticed this building boarded up and looking a little lost, and really liked the architecture,\u201d said Brad Palmer, principal and lead engineer for Interpres. \u201cIt\u2019s a neat building; we\u2019re glad we were the ones that got to renovate it and have it for our own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Project Profile: Interpres Building Solutions\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c-LDGWfpwY0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preserving and enhancing the existing building\u2019s midcentury modern details in the design of their new office meant finding a way to accentuate its clean lines, square corners and basic geometric shapes with new architectural features. To accomplish this, Interpres utilized a variety of sleek, crisply detailed lighting fixtures from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in innovative ways to breathe new life into the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the first space to be seen by both visitors and employees, the reception area required special attention. Williams\u2019 linear <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/products\/MX4R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MX4R fixture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> steals the scene here, wrapping across an inside corner from the wall and onto the ceiling, creating a distinct and eye-catching feature for this important space.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89307\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89307\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-89307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/mx4r-6ds_interpres_reception-400x267.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-89307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image courtesy of Williams<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When applied creatively, as they are here, Williams\u2019 linear lights can be designed to turn corners, create unique shapes or follow a snaking path through nearly any space. A variety of lenses, color temperature and lumen output can further enhance desired effects. In this case, Interpres\u2019 feature wall fixture was specified with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/dynamic#tunable-white\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tunable White<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allowing a seamless adjustment of color temperature to match the time of day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One aspect of this building revitalization project that couldn\u2019t be ignored was a circular opening between the first and second floors \u2014 a vestige of the fire pole once used by the former occupants. Interpres opted to keep this singular detail intact, although it\u2019s now enhanced with a sculptural steel plate featuring the firm\u2019s logo and surrounded with square downlights recessed into a drywall ceiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89308\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89308\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-89308 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common-300x263.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common-1024x898.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common-768x673.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/6ds_interpres_common-342x300.jpg 342w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-89308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image courtesy of Williams<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams\u2019 low-profile <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hew.com\/products\/6DS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6DS downlight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was used in this location, with the similar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/products\/4DS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4DS fixture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> placed in adjacent rooms with drop ceilings. These unobtrusive, square lights were desirable for their ability to blend in with the fire station\u2019s existing characteristics. Specified with a flush trim, they appear to disappear against the building&#8217;s notable features, although the same fixtures can also be specified with open, recessed or angled trims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These downlights are equipped with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/dynamic#tunable-color\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tunable Color<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and can be adjusted to emit any hue on the spectrum of visible light. \u201cThat was an important spec for us,\u201d Palmer said. While color-changing lights are often used for corporate branding or events, Interpres will utilize this feature to conduct in-office lighting demonstrations for their clients. \u201cAs we have clients come into our site they can see some of the possibilities of what they can do with different lighting systems,\u201d he explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_89309\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89309\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-89309 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office-300x292.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office-1024x996.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office-768x747.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/4ds_interpres_office-308x300.jpg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-89309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image courtesy of Williams<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The square proportions of the downlights mirror a set of small, punched square windows set vertically along an outside wall of the building\u2019s staircase. While Interpes elected to keep those windows in place, they removed an interior wall surrounding the staircase to let in more light. Additional vertical space was gained by removing an old plaster ceiling on the upper floor, allowing Williams\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hew.com\/products\/75S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">75S strip lights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be suspended between a series of exposed open-web steel joists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Williams\u2019 75S fixture is a cleanly detailed strip light with square corners and hard edges that match the context of the firehouse. Even a square lens was utilized in this case, although the same fixture can be specified with round and flat lenses.
