The following video \u2014 a project realized by <i>The Atlantic<\/i>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/author\/sam-price-waldman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Price-Waldman<\/a> \u2014 tells the story of Arcosanti, an experimental town in the central Arizona desert and the solutions that the model holds for the future of <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/feed\/q\/q:cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cities<\/a> throughout the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe define Arcosanti as a kind of urban laboratory,\u201d says Stein, where the experiment is one that deals with spatiality. \u201cHow much space do we really need to take up in order to have rich and rewarding lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"713\" height=\"401\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"webkitallowfullscreen\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" mozallowfullscreen=\"mozallowfullscreen\" src=\"\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/video\/iframe\/502823\/\" helvetica=\"\" neue\",=\"\" helvetica,=\"\" arial,=\"\" sans-serif;\"=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i> Having trouble viewing on mobile? Artificial lights are rarely turned on, as the desert sun provides natural light throughout the days. The inhabitants pay a tuition fee and contribute to building the architecture of the city. The well-being of such communities must be considered when assessing the goal of expanding the Arcosanti experiment, which is put forward as a solution to dense and polluting modes of urban living.
