In the past few moments, the cathedral&#8217;s spire and roof \u2014 made almost entirely of wood \u2014 have collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of Notre-Dame to the city of Paris cannot be overstated \u2014 the building sees around 13 million visitors a year, more than the <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/inspiration\/stories\/reviled-to-renowned-the-eiffel-tower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eiffel Tower<\/a>. In the 1790s, Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the French Revolution when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p data-reactid=\".1cb7wwaxufo.3.0.0.1.0.$lx-commentary.$lx-commentary.2.0.1.1:$post-5cb4cd98739f020665817539.0.3.0.0:$post_0\">A major restoration project supervised by Eug\u00e8ne Viollet-le-Duc began in 1845 and continued for twenty-five years. Beginning in 1963, the facade of the Cathedral was cleaned of centuries of soot and grime, returning it to its original color.
