He conceives the look, feel and function of the some of the world\u2019s largest private yachts, appropriately dubbed \u201csuperyachts\u201d. His latest challenge, however, took place on land: he was recently engaged to design the Blue Pavilion, a clubhouse for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepaviliabay.com.hk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pavilia Bay<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">residential complex on Hong Kong\u2019s waterfront.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Blue Pavilion at Pavilia Bay, Hong Kong\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/304237202?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To give the residents a sense of helming a superyacht on a voyage at the shorefront, Briand was a natural choice for the design, but as his first building project, the Blue Pavilion presented him with a set of new challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48063 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB_Building-Sketch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4906\" height=\"4609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB_Building-Sketch.jpg 4906w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB_Building-Sketch-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB_Building-Sketch-768x722.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB_Building-Sketch-1024x962.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4906px) 100vw, 4906px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Larger than any yacht he has designed and subject to a slew of regulations beyond the scope of naval architecture, Briand nevertheless found the work just as complex and restrictive as the numerous, interrelated considerations required for the creation of a superyacht. The essence of his response to this challenge lies in the materiality of the building\u2019s fa\u00e7ade, finish surfaces and whimsical details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-48058 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Facade_Day_3-copy.jpg\" alt=\"pavilia bay superyacht\" width=\"2200\" height=\"1875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Facade_Day_3-copy.jpg 2200w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Facade_Day_3-copy-300x256.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Facade_Day_3-copy-768x655.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Facade_Day_3-copy-1024x873.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2200px) 100vw, 2200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom the exterior, The Pavilia Bay echoes many characteristics of a superyacht,\u201d Briand said, \u201cthe two towers as the two masts, the front of the podium facing the sea and the bows.\u201d Taking advantage of The Pavilia Bay\u2019s formal composition, as well as its site on Hong Kong\u2019s Rambler Channel, Briand\u2019s first major design move was to clad the exterior of the Blue Pavilion with the same type of steel plates used on ocean-going vessels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constructed from more than 650 plates and weighing more than 75 tons in total, the clubhouse fa\u00e7ade was crafted by artisan manufacturers using high quality steel fabrication techniques. Each plate was individually cut, shaped, welded, polished and painted in a process similar to constructing a yacht in a shipyard. The appearance of these curves offers a clue to their detailing: nearly every finish surface shines with the gloss of highly-polished sealant, a staple in marine interiors, where water resistance is paramount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item aligncenter wp-image-48053 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Swimming-Pool_Day_4.jpg\" alt=\"pavilia bay blue pavilion briand\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Swimming-Pool_Day_4.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Swimming-Pool_Day_4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Swimming-Pool_Day_4-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Swimming-Pool_Day_4-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surface appearance of these materials is more than a purely aesthetic concern. The top floor of the clubhouse, which Briand likens to the top deck of a yacht, is comprised of a series of free-flowing, indoor-outdoor spaces surrounding an infinity pool that overlooks the sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe technical elements are always established on the main deck,\u201d he said. \u201cHere you\u2019ll find water, carbon fiber, flooring and tinted glass.\u201d In keeping with this environment, the flooring on this level is composite decking made to resemble teak. It is made out of carbon fiber, with the same technologies that are used to build racing boats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realized through precise, custom-crafted iterations of molding, resin infusion and casting, the use of carbon fiber \u2014 both on the bridge and an exterior flagpole \u2014 stands out in this project. Rarely used in residential buildings, carbon fiber is known for possessing a combination of high strength and low weight, making it a fundamental material in maritime design. With a manufacturing process taking longer than a year and a half, it\u2019s used here to bestow the Blue Pavilion with a distinct touch of sea-faring aesthetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item aligncenter wp-image-48050 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Podium_Night_1.jpg\" alt=\"pavilia bay blue pavilion briand\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Podium_Night_1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Podium_Night_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Podium_Night_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TPB-Podium_Night_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Briand noted that \u201cwater surrounds the vessel,\u201d referring to the concept of the clubhouse taking on the role of a yacht. This may seem straightforward for a structure sited on a coastline, but his metaphor is actually denoting one of the many charming maritime details he included in the Blue Pavilion\u2019s design: the clubhouse\u2019s front entrance is separated from land by a small, shallow pool, which visitors must use a bridge to cross. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ringed by decorative mooring bollards, the entrance pool is illuminated at night from within, using the same type of underwater lights found on a yacht\u2019s hull. Elsewhere in the Blue Pavilion, shower stalls evoke a ship\u2019s funnel, while boating regalia abounds throughout. However, the sensibility that helped Briand bridge the gap between water and land the most is a fluency with materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The building\u2019s steel plate fa\u00e7ade, abundance of water-resistant surfaces and delightful detailing successfully imparts the same sense of excitement, adventure and possibility as a voyage on the high
