Their competition-winning proposal, which they dubbed Corona after an African word for crown, features an intricately detailed, bronze-colored fa\u00e7ade that is steeped in references to the struggles and\u00a0achievements of African Americans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47248\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47248\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-47248 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oloweofise.jpg\" alt=\"David Adjaye, National Museum of African American History \" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oloweofise.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oloweofise-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/oloweofise-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Photo by Jahi Chikwendiu; via The Washington Post.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The inspiration for the tiered exterior came from one of the sculptures in the museum&#8217;s collection, a 7-foot-tall depiction of a crowned figure that was carved by late African artist Olowe of Ise. \u201cIt is a building with many narratives \u2014 relating to the context, the history and the program,&#8221;\u00a0David Adjaye, founder of Adjaye Associates, <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/practice\/materials\/david-adjaye-on-the-future-of-the-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Architizer<\/a>. &#8220;This narrative is articulated immediately by the silhouette \u2014 borrowing from the form of a Yoruba sculpture \u2014 while also resonating with the angle of the Washington Monument.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47286\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47286\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47286 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bradley_adjaye_NMAAHC_11.jpg\" alt=\"David Adjaye, National Museum of African American History\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bradley_adjaye_NMAAHC_11.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bradley_adjaye_NMAAHC_11-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bradley_adjaye_NMAAHC_11-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bradley_adjaye_NMAAHC_11-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Photo by Darren Bradley.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Each tier of the fa\u00e7ade consists of approximately 1,200 ornate cast aluminum panels, which were custom designed and fabricated for the project by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.enclos.com\/projects\/national-museum-of-african-american-history-culture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enclos<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theelementwebsite.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Element<\/a><\/strong>. The panels measure 4-feet-wide by 5-feet-tall, and weigh upwards of 135 pounds apiece. The architects studied iron railings and fa\u00e7ade ornaments from South Carolina to New Orleans before selecting a historic grille as the basis of their design. The architects used a combination of algorithmically-controlled energy analysis software and full-scale mock ups on site to determine the best location for each module. Instead, the design team collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/brands\/valspar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Valspar<\/strong><\/a> over an 18-month period to develop a simulated bronze coating suitable for cast aluminum. The final color is a mixture of their standard Black Fluropon metal coating and three artisanal shades \u2014 African Sunset, African Sunrise and African Rose \u2014 created specifically for the museum.<\/p>\n<p>The coatings were applied by hand to create natural variations and then finished with a pigmented clear coat for added depth.\u00a0&#8220;The idea was to express African American culture in a different way than stone could and provide a range of bronze color depending upon the time of day, weather and exposure of each fa\u00e7ade seasonally,&#8221; project architect Hal Davis said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metalarchitecture.com\/articles\/architectural-crown-jewel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview with Metal Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_47244\" style=\"width: 677px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-47244\" class=\"size-full wp-image-47244 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/10236-51.jpg\" alt=\"David Adjaye, National Museum of African American History\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/10236-51.jpg 667w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/10236-51-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-47244\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Photo by Brad Feinknopf.<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the interior, terrazzo floors trimmed in bronze and speckled with African marble echo the fa\u00e7ade&#8217;s historic and cultural references. These expansive, column-free surfaces become a canvas for the bronze filagree, which renders the passage of time with a complicated play of light and shadow while, at the same time, framing panoramas of the Memorial Grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><p><em>Architects: Want to have your project featured?
