The spotlight was also cast on some treasured architectural history: 10 of Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s buildings were nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status<\/a>.<\/p>\n March<\/b><\/p>\n Facebook Headquarters, Menlo Park, Calif., United States; <\/i>\u00a9 <\/i>Mark Zuckerberg<\/i><\/p>\n As spring arrived, German architect Frei Otto was posthumously awarded the Pritzker Prize<\/a>. Gehry landed with a second major project in as many months; this time, receiving rave reviews for a convention-busting office for Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s Facebook Headquarters<\/a>. Meanwhile, Dame Zaha Hadid<\/a> caused a stir with some strong words during an in-depth interview with the Huffington Post. The standout line? \u201cIf you want an easy life, don\u2019t be an architect.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n April<\/b><\/p>\n Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, United States; <\/i>\u00a9 <\/i>Karin Jobst <\/i><\/p>\n Renzo Piano\u2019s multifaceted Whitney Museum of American Art<\/a> welcomed thousands through its doors in New York City, and the architect also delivered a timeless piece of urban design in Malta\u2019s capital with the impressive Valletta City Gate<\/a> regeneration project (read more here<\/a>). Herzog and de Meuron<\/a> scored with its own landmark project as the spring moved on: the Bordeaux stadium<\/a> maintained the firm\u2019s sterling reputation<\/a> when it comes to designing sporting arenas.<\/p>\n May<\/b><\/p>\n Fondazione Prada, Milan, Italy;<\/i>\u00a9 <\/i>Bas Princeton<\/i><\/p>\n The critics were out in force to assess the cultural value of countless pavilions at the Milan World Expo including attention-grabbing structures by Studio Libeskind<\/a>, Nemesi and Partners<\/a>, and Studio Link-Arc<\/a>. While Jacques Herzog labeled the festival an \u201cobsolete vanity fair,\u201d some structures were received more positively \u2014 especially the UK Pavilion by artist Wolfgang Buttress and global firm BDP<\/a>, which won the International Prize for Best Pavilion Architecture<\/a>. Meanwhile, Rem Koolhaas unveiled a new cultural landmark for Russia in the shape of the Garage Museum<\/a>, a polycarbonate-clad center for contemporary art in Moscow.<\/p>\n July<\/b><\/p>\n Messner Mountain Museum Corones, South Tyrol, Italy; <\/i>\u00a9 Zaha Hadid Architects<\/i><\/p>\n Zaha Hadid<\/a> was back in the headlines again during the summer, for mixed reasons: first, the British-Iraqi architect was dealt a major blow when her firm\u2019s commission to design the 2020 Olympic Stadium<\/a> in Tokyo was canceled in the midst of mounting dissent from the public and her fellow professionals<\/a>. On the flip side, the architect completed one of her most unusual projects to date: the Messner Mountain Museum<\/a> formed a fitting tribute to one of the world\u2019s greatest adventurers.<\/p>\n August<\/b><\/p>\n Model for Nepal Shelters; <\/i>\u00a9 Shigeru Ban Architects<\/i><\/p>\n Following the devastating earthquakes that shook Nepal back in April, the issue of resiliency in architecture was brought to the forefront once again. Enter Japanese architect Shigeru Ban<\/a>, who proposed an innovative series of shelters<\/a> for the victims constructed from cardboard tubes and the rubble of collapsed buildings. Meanwhile, the battle between political bureaucracy and great urban design heated up in New York as Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a>\u2019s Times Square plaza was heartily defended by both professionals and the public<\/a>.<\/p>\n September<\/b><\/p>\n Rendering of 432 Park Avenue, New York, United States; <\/i>\u00a9 Rafael Vi\u00f1oly Architects<\/i><\/p>\n Staying in Manhattan, the world\u2019s tallest residential building<\/a> was completed on Park Avenue: Rafael Vi\u00f1oly\u2019s skinny skyscraper is the first among many soaring towers to be built in Midtown \u2014 with SHoP\u2019s slender skyscraper on 57th Street, Moshe Safdie<\/a>\u2019s New York debut<\/a>, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill<\/a>\u2019s Nordstrom Tower, and David Chipperfield<\/a>\u2019s \u201cTectonic Skyscraper<\/a>\u201d soon coming to the Big Apple.<\/p>\n October<\/b><\/p>\n Grace Farms, New Canaan, Conn., United States; \u00a9 Iwan Baan<\/i><\/p>\n The beginning of October saw the opening of the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial<\/a> sweepingly entitled \u201cThe State of the Art of Architecture.\u201d While some were full of praise for the eclectic exhibition of neo-postmodernist curiosities<\/a>, the oft-outspoken Patrik Schumacher lamented a perceived preoccupation with what he believes is \u201cmoralizing and politicized<\/a>\u201d work. On a calmer note, Japanese minimalist SANAA<\/a> completed the idyllic Grace Farms<\/a>, a new center for faith and the arts flowing through the rolling hills of Connecticut.<\/p>\n November<\/b><\/p>\n \u00a9 James Morris<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n\n Flint House, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom; \u00a9 James Morris<\/i><\/p>\n On the east coast of China, Gensler<\/a> completed the Shanghai Tower<\/a>, a 2,000-foot-tall building full of \u201csky gardens\u201d that constitutes a convention-breaking moment for super-tall buildings. In New York, Santiago Calatrava received the 2015 European Prize for Architecture<\/a> for his contribution to architectural heritage across the continent. Meanwhile, Skene Catling de la Pe\u00f1a<\/a>\u2019s beautifully detailed Flint House<\/a> was crowned the worthy winner of the RIBA House of the Year prize.<\/p>\n December<\/b><\/p>\n Rendering of the New Chelsea Stadium, London, United Kingdom; \u00a9 Herzog and de Meuron<\/i><\/p>\n Herzog and de Meuron continued to rule the realm of stadium design by securing the commission to design English soccer giants Chelsea F.C.\u2019s 60,000-capacity stadium<\/a>, a \u201cbrick and iron cathedral of sport.\u201d Some major names in the profession also received recognition for their contributions to the built environment: Tadao Ando<\/a> was presented with the third annual Isamu Noguchi Award<\/a>, Richard Rogers<\/a> scooped the J.C.
