It was borne of a courageous decision by innovative young architecture firm <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/cobe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COBE<\/a> and its client \u2014 rather than raze an old industrial building on Copenhagen\u2019s waterfront, they decided to give it a second life as a home for residents of a vibrant new district.<\/p>\n<p>The finished mixed-use complex, named <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/the-silo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Silo<\/a>, is a unique example of adaptive reuse that forms a compelling precedent for architects tasked with regenerating urban centers. For this reason, Architizer is delighted to announce COBE\u2019s creation as one our <strong>Projects of the Year<\/strong> for the 2018 A+Awards.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/284718706?autoplay=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Silo is not just another housing project; it is really a project that is speaking about the transformation of our cities from industrial cities to more livable cities,\u201d explained Dan Stubbergaard,\u00a0Founder and Architect at COBE. \u201cIt\u2019s a post-industrial monument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45602 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.25-PM.png\" alt=\"cobe the silo\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1102\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.25-PM.png 2100w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.25-PM-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.25-PM-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.25-PM-1024x537.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2100px) 100vw, 2100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tons of concrete from the original structure was carved out to make way for minimalist, light-filled apartments of metal and glass. The materiality of the building successfully blends modern aesthetics with the silo\u2019s raw industrial heritage. The project also merges private and public realms, with a gallery situated on the ground floor and a restaurant and viewing terrace located within a &#8220;floating box&#8221; at the top of the building.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45603 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.52-PM.png\" alt=\"cobe the silo\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.52-PM.png 2560w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.52-PM-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.52-PM-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2018-08-11-at-2.23.52-PM-1024x538.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a very strong belief that we should keep the soul and the character of the silo,\u201d continued Stubbergaard. \u201cWe want to preserve the building as much [as possible] but give it a new three-dimensional skin, like a really super cool jacket.\u201d This jacket was pieced together using modular balconies and window frames, each clad with galvanized steel panels and craned into position against the concrete substructure. Developed in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.skandglas.se\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skandinaviska Glassystem (SGS)<\/a>, the faceted building envelope catches the light at different angles throughout the day, shimmering like a new suit of armor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-45604 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1499294799968The_silo-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"the silo cobe\" width=\"1936\" height=\"1012\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1499294799968The_silo-1-1.jpg 1936w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1499294799968The_silo-1-1-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1499294799968The_silo-1-1-768x401.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1499294799968The_silo-1-1-1024x535.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1936px) 100vw, 1936px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From conception to completion, The Silo represents all that is good about architectural teamwork today.
