So when <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/heatherwick-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heatherwick Studio<\/a> set out to create <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/zeitz-mocaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zeitz MOCAA<\/a> \u2014 a daring structure on Cape Town\u2019s Victoria &amp; Alfred Waterfront \u2014 the architects knew it would be a challenging process filled with many reiterations. Originally built in 1921 to store and grade maize from all over South Africa, the imposing concrete structure had since been decommissioned in the 1990s, with the advent of containerized shipping. Astonishingly, each silo was originally constructed in a single pour, amplifying their geometry and overall monumentality. The result was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9\u00be-inches-thick<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reinforced concrete \u201csleeves,\u201d which were poured inside each 18-foot-diameter cylinder. In doing so with striking geometric glazing, the architects also asserted the building\u2019s identity, as a beacon of contemporary art from miles away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To create the structure\u2019s striking faceted windows and a vast skylight that doubles as an unusual floor for the rooftop sculpture garden, the architects partnered with <strong>Mazor Aluminum<\/strong>. Heatherwick designed beautifully detailed pillowy windows to fill spaces where concrete walls previously existed. Not only does the pattern create a walkable surface for the sculpture garden, but it also prevents excessive amounts of heat from building up inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zeitz MOCAA is a nod to perseverant architectural process.
