Building and paving over wetlands, barricading cities with seawalls, slicing through migration routes with motorways \u2014 a great deal of cement, steel and asphalt has been called into service in the long war against the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>Despite centuries-old efforts, sea level rise, increasingly frequent and devastating storms, floods, droughts and a changing climate shows that efforts to conquer and isolate the city from nature have been futile at best, and fatalistic acts of ego at worst.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architects.org\/bsaspace\/exhibitions\/naturestructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>NatureStructure<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a new exhibition opening May 17 at Boston&#8217;s BSA Space \u2014 reverses the built environment\u2019s battle against nature. Instead of combating natural forces, <em>NatureStructure<\/em> represents a new generation of innovative infrastructure that uses the powers and processes of nature as components, providing a framework for a sustainable and coexistent future.<\/p>\n<p>Animosity towards nature has casually seeped into the lexicon of development over time. Cities and waterfront developments increase their footprint through \u201creclaimed\u201d land (begging the question: When was it taken away in order to be <em>re<\/em>claimed?). When the power of nature is acknowledged, companies seek to \u201charness\u201d natural forces or \u201ccapture\u201d its benefits: all terms of dominion, containment, conquering.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42648\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42648\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-42648 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fish_apartments-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"naturestructure\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fish_apartments-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fish_apartments-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fish_apartments-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Fish_apartments-66x50.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Fish Apartment Squares by Reef Design Lab, Melbourne, Australia<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>NatureStructure<\/em> is movement away from dominion and towards a synergistic relationship with nature. Norwegians have a phrase for it: \u201c<em>Spille p\u00e5 lag med naturen.\u201d \u2014 \u201cTo play on the same team as nature<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s Reef Design Lab is one of Team Nature\u2019s star players. In Sydney Harbor, the sleek splendor of the Opera House continues below water with sheer metal waterfront walls that are inhospitable for the sea-life that once lined the harbor. In response, Reef Design Lab designed and developed \u201cFish Apartment\u201d habitat panels for the Opera House\u2019s waterfront skirting to restore the harbor\u2019s habitat.<\/p>\n<p>Further out to sea, Reef Design\u2019s MARS (Modular Artificial Reef Systems) units are 3D-printed reefs designed and installed to reverse the depletion of reef habitats.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42653\" style=\"width: 2510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42653\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-42653 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MARS.jpg\" alt=\"naturestructure\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MARS.jpg 2500w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MARS-300x138.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MARS-768x352.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/MARS-1024x469.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2500px) 100vw, 2500px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42653\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>MARS\u2014Modular Artificial Reef Structure by Reef Design Lab, Melbourne, Australia<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Loss of sea-life habitat impacts cities like the ripples from a pebble dropped in the pond \u2014 except the ripples come in the form of huge waves. When Hurricane Sandy hit New York, one of the reasons for its devastating waves was the depletion of the city\u2019s surrounding oyster beds. Oyster beds form natural buffers that break and disrupt the might of waves as the approach the shore.<\/p>\n<p>BESE elements is one of many design innovations within <em>NatureStructure<\/em> created to help restore coastal oyster beds. Made from potato starch, the modular units can be snapped together at varying widths and depths to provide natural foundations for everything from Oyster colonies to sea grass. Once the habitats colonize the structures and establish themselves, the manmade foundations naturally degrade.<\/p>\n<p>In Delfland, the Netherlands, the might of the sea has been utilized as a repair tool. Instead of taking the common piece-meal approach of filling in eroded coastal areas with dump trucks of sand, The Delfland Sand Engine uses coastal wind and tides to distribute a 21.5 million cubic meter sand deposit along the 14-kilometer coastline. Over the past seven years, instead of dispatching an army of dump trucks to fill in erosion spots, the natural distribution system has increased the sandy coastline of the Delfland region by dozens of meters.<\/p>\n<p>Inland, Scotland\u2019s Biomatrix Water has designed floating islands that naturally clean urban water ways by hosting a flotilla of plants with root systems that remove contaminants and provide habitat and food above the waterline for birds and pollinators.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42651\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42651\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-42651 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vlotwatering_Bridge_Raymond-Rutting-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"naturestructure\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vlotwatering_Bridge_Raymond-Rutting-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vlotwatering_Bridge_Raymond-Rutting-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Vlotwatering_Bridge_Raymond-Rutting-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Vlotwatering Bridge by NEXT Architects (NL), aka the &#8220;Bat Bridge&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition to design that nurtures and heals habitats, <em>NatureStructure<\/em> offers a vision for infrastructure that provides mutual benefits for man and nature instead of creating more buttresses separating the two. In the Netherlands, The Vlotwatering Bridge, a.k.a., \u201cThe Bat Bridge\u201d by NEXT Architects allows cyclists and pedestrians to cross on its surface, while underneath, the bridge\u2019s supporting surfaces have been specifically designed to provide predator-resistant nesting areas for bats.<\/p>\n<p><em>NatureStructure<\/em> systems heal and create sustainable foundations for the future, but the reality is that a lot of damage has already been done during historical missteps. The bad Karma created over time has come back in many forms, including increasing urban floods and cloud burst rain storms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42649\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42649\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-42649 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/POP-UP-by-Third-Nature-1024x724.jpg\" alt=\"naturestructure\" width=\"1024\" height=\"724\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/POP-UP-by-Third-Nature-1024x724.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/POP-UP-by-Third-Nature-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/POP-UP-by-Third-Nature-768x543.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-42649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>POP-UP by Third Nature (Denmark)<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s Third Nature has developed a parking garage to mitigate the severity of urban flooding. Their POP-UP parking garage is designed to retain up to 10 million liters of rainwater in its base when heavy rains hit a city, rising and falling like a public gauge of stormwater levels as the water gathers and dissipates. Similarly, in Kuala Lumpur, the SMART Tunnel has been designed to act as a reservoir for floodwaters during the region\u2019s rainy season, swapping out levels of moving traffic for floodwater storage as needed.<\/p>\n<p><em>NatureStructure<\/em> is a new generation of design and systems to solve and correct the historical imbalance, if not injustice, between the built environment and nature. It is a required shift in the relationship with nature as well as a resourceful model. So many material, financial and human resources have been expended to counter and conquer natural forces that in time always prevail. All along, the enemy at the gates held the answer.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHuman subtlety will never devise an invention more beautiful, more simple or more direct than does nature because in her inventions nothing is lacking, and nothing is superfluous.\u201d \u2013 Leonardo da Vinci<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>NatureStructure opens at <\/em>BSA Space, Boston\u2019s leading center for\u00a0architecture and design, <em>on May 17.
