Take RIBA’s Plan of Works for instance, a neat, color-coded diagram that describes an architectural project from beginning to end through seven different stages: strategic definition, preparation and briefing, concept design, spatial coordination, technical design, manufacturing and construction, handover and, finally, use. And yet, anyone who has studied architecture knows that the process is not as simple as it seems.

Hidden primarily in the shadows of the academic world, concepts such as “research through making” or “design research” have been gaining ground within the architectural discipline. In 1993, Sir Christopher Frayling, then Rector of the Royal College of Art in London, published an essay titled Research in Art and Design. In the first paragraph, he writes:

“The word ‘research’ has traditionally been associated with obscure corners of specialized libraries, where solitary scholars live; white-coated people in laboratories, doing esoteric things with test-tubes; universities, rather than colleges; arms’ length, rather than engagement; arty-facts, rather than artifacts; words, not deeds. Recently, an opposing tendency has emerged — largely as the pragmatic result of decisions about government funding of higher education – where the word has come to be associated with: what artists, craftspeople and designers do all the time anyway; artifacts, rather than artyfacts; deeds not words.”

Royal College of Art Research Papers, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1993

Death of the HOA by Ty Skeiky, 2025 Vision Awards, Jury Winner & Editor’s Choice, Drawing – Hand-Drawn

In short, Frayiling discusses the different stereotypes associated with what doing research actually means. He poses the question of how research can be legitimized within creative disciplines such as art, design and by extent architecture, which don’t always produce traditional outputs. He outlines three modes of research: research into design, which is considered the “traditional” investigation about design by studying the history and theory of architecture, styles, materials etc.; research for design, which supports the process of designing through technical studies, material testing, site analysis or sustainability data; and research through design, which showcases how the creative process produces new knowledge through making and reflecting.

Orchestrated Sensibility by Masataka Yoshikawa – Lawrence Technological University, 2025 Vision Awards, Finalist, Drawing – Computer Aided

For architects, this means that every drawing, model, material experiment and even built work is understood as a research artifact, as long as it moves the practice further, beyond the project itself. In other words, instead of viewing architecture as a linear building-making process, where every drawing or model is merely a representation of the final product, what if we viewed it as an act of research?

Imagine the 1:1 detail mockup of a building foundation becoming a thinking device that explores not just how the structure meets the ground, but also how it operates with the immediate landscape. By contextualizing this act of making the prototype as an investigative task, the process itself becomes a form of inquiry; perhaps it reveals information about the soil and the legislative parts of the land, or even the wider impact the specific building typology may have on the city. It transforms making from a means to an end; into a method of understanding.

ENSEMBLE: Configurations of Objects, Forms and Spatial Relations by Julian Edelmann, 2025 Vision Awards, Jury Winner, Physical Models – Presentation Model

In support of this shift, many academic institutions have developed doctoral and post-doctoral programs, often promoting them through the words “lab,” “by design,” “making,” “practice,” etc. This encourages researchers to experiment with materials, methods of drawing and modeling as well as ways of recording and reflecting on the work. Consequently, the act of making, which was by default relegated to the domain of practice, is finding new academic legitimacy. Yet, paradoxically, this evolution, which should have brought academia and practice closer together, is creating more tension between them. Why? Because while architecture by design encourages practitioners to slow down, experiment, think and reflect, the industry is moving faster than ever.

AI-generated imagery floods our screens, renders are produced faster than thought itself and architectural practice becomes increasingly abstracted and culturally hollow. On the other hand, making for research and not representation — regardless of whether it is digital or physical – reintroduces scale, context and friction, when working for example with specific materials and conditions or struggle to assemble parts of a model. By grounding design in the tangible realities that appear when architects “make”, this gap between production and understanding has a chance to be bridged.

Data Democracy: The Memory Centre by Leo Wing Lok Lui, 2025 Vision Awards, Finalist, Physical Models – Concept Model

Through this article, I am not proposing to return to the analogue methods but truly acknowledge the benefits of engaging directly with primary matter and recognize this process as embodied knowledge, i.e., a situated understanding between the conditions that construct our world.
