But what if the imperfections of this material could be harnessed as a fabrication tool? A group of New York\u2013based architects, engineers and educators are using cracked clay as a cast to design a temporary pavilion on <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/the-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Governors Island<\/a> in New York City this summer. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/208835443\" width=\"713\" height=\"401\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen=\"\" mozallowfullscreen=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Their project, \u201cCast &amp; Place,\u201d is this year\u2019s winning entry for the seventh annual <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.figmentproject.org\/the_city_of_dreams_pavilion_2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City of Dreams Pavilion<\/a> Competition. The design contest is hosted each year by <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.figmentproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FIGMENT NYC<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/aiany.aiany.org\/index.php?section=committees&amp;prrid=17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emerging New York Architects Committee<\/a> of the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seaony.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Structural Engineering Association of New York<\/a>. Molten aluminum will be poured in between the crevices of the clay, cohesively blending together to form a series of permeable metal surfaces. Cracked-clay reflecting pools will also be built into the ground on each side of the panels, showing in real time how the material responds to hot and rainy weather conditions. On the other hand, there is something political to be said here about the economics and process of waste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team hopes the project proves an educational experience for the city. They are working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.surewecan.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sure We Can<\/a>, a recycling center in Bushwick, to collect the aluminum needed for the panels from local canners. They\u2019ll be working with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.groundsforsculpture.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grounds for Sculpture<\/a> in Hamilton, New Jersey, to create the next prototype on March 25.<\/p>\n<p>For \u201cCast &amp; Place\u201d to be realized, Team Aesop needs $30,000 for materials collection, fabrication, installation and disassembly.
