A horde of social media critics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to divisive architecture, it is the layperson that seems to carry the strongest option. They are, after all, the ones confronting our built environment on a daily basis. And while designers have always faced the unpredictable inundation of critiques, it appears today\u2019s architectural community arguably faces the toughest crowd to please:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media commentators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some attribute this phenomenon of extreme frankness to the mask of anonymity one can wear via social media, while others believe such online rhetoric simply mirrors existing societal beliefs. Nonetheless, the architecture community has not been spared from divisive online debate, and polarizing conversations surrounding \u2018ugly\u2019 architecture fervently play out on social media. Twitter has become the modern-day stage for deliberation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildworld.co.uk\/blog\/archives\/the-ugliest-buildings-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buildworld<\/a> has rounded up some of the most maligned buildings in the UK and US. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results? Both predictable and surprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we highlight a few structures from the list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildworld.co.uk\/blog\/archives\/the-ugliest-buildings-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Eyesores<\/a> that caught our attention. The vision for this project was to erect a de-institutionalized and organic design that embraces Scotland\u2019s verdant landscape. It opened three years later than planned, was designed by a foreign architect and went wildly over budget. Jury Winner, 2019 A+Awards, Concepts &#8211; Plus &#8211; Architecture +Preservation.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/boston-city-hall-restoration\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boston City Hall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranked #2 as top eyesores in the US, and ironically, despite being dubbed the world\u2019s ugliest building time and time again, this structure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/inspiration\/stories\/worlds-ugliest-building-wins-major-architecture-award\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">won<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a prestigious <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.architizer.com\/a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A+Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in 2019. Designed by the Boston-based firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/utile-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utile, Inc.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this project was an immense undertaking by the design team and held great significance to local Bostonians, making it extra important to get it right. The original Brutalist structure was built in the 60s and underwent a massive recharacterization by Utile, Inc. in 2018. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_167409\" style=\"width: 1636px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-167409\" class=\"lazy lazy_media_item wp-image-167409 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1626\" height=\"711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2.jpg 1626w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2-300x131.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2-1024x448.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2-768x336.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2-1536x672.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/15609550020932017AG27.504-2.jpg-2-400x175.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1626px) 100vw, 1626px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-167409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Boston City Hall by Utile, Inc., Boston, MA, United States, 2018.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the major transformations were the main lobby, the public transaction windows and a new lighting scheme that leveraged LEDs and followed the city\u2019s sustainability goals. Utile\u2019s approach: to celebrate the original edifice by accentuating its existing features. Then why so much hate? Was it the preservation of such a polarizing Brutalist building? The obtrusive LEDs?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the case can be made for public disdain of civic structures \u2014 edifices meant to represent every and all citizens \u2014 it is fascinating how many utilitarian buildings also came under social media scrutiny.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Royal Liverpool Hospital<\/h2>\n<div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Drone footage of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MQb4VqRvyHU?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Royal Liverpool Hospital has also made it on the list of architectural misfortunes. The original Brutalist mammoth was designed in the 60s and has since been replaced by a brand-new edifice in 2022. And it appears both the original and new structure have come under Twitter scrutiny. The hospital has been an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2016\/feb\/15\/royal-liverpool-university-hospital-redevelopment-city-healthier-wealthier\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">icon<\/a> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ugly\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> design since its inception, which made the new development a welcomed change by local residents. But according to Buildworld\u2019s findings, Twitter critics have maintained their distaste for the Royal Liverpool Hospital. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction of this new hospital broke ground in 2013 and was designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/nbbj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBBJ<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/hks-inc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HKS<\/a> \u2014 two firms well-versed in medical architecture. The design replaces the Brutalist eyesore altogether, sitting on an entirely new plot and designed to improve healthcare and patient experience. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolft.nhs.uk\/new-royal\/about-the-building\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides a safe and healing environment, with state-of-the-art operating theaters, clinical research facilities and improved inpatient bedroom entertainment. One might see this upgraded hospital as worthy of celebration; however, Twitter critics say otherwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Denver International Airport <\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Denver International Airport by Fentress Architects\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/148511112?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or take the Denver International Airport for example. Completed in 1995 by Fentress Architects, this design ranked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fentressarchitects.com\/projects\/denver-international-airport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number four<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the AIA list of favorite American architectural landmarks, yet scores very poorly on public opinion. The design broke the mold of traditional airport architecture by relocating infrastructure underground. The result \u2014 a rising structure that speaks to the forms and movement of the surrounding Rocky Mountains. Designed as a welcome symbol to Colorado and the West, this airport features the largest structurally integrated tensile-membrane roof in the world and certainly catches the gaze of the in-flight aircraft passenger. So perhaps we should see this list as a welcomed conversation, a healthy debate, a frivolous airing of our grievances.
