The conceptual tower is a quintessential \u201cvertical city,\u201d incorporating 600 housing units, a shopping center, conference rooms and offices, a sports area, museum, spa, and a bar and restaurant. When the steam is then funneled back to the surface, it would turn turbines to generate electricity and heat for the tower. Completed in 2013, the steel-framed building \u2014 a circular arrangement of hotel rooms beneath petal-like canopies \u2014 is constructed using no concrete or other water-reliant materials and is designed to be entirely self-sustaining. To this end, the tower&#8217;s highly responsive fa\u00e7ade system is designed to transform in reaction to prevailing winds and the sun\u2019s position in order to optimize stack ventilation and shading throughout the day. While architects are forging ahead with low-rise arcologies in the Middle East \u2014 look no further than <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/foster-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foster + Partners<\/a>\u2019 high-tech adventure in sustainability, <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/projects\/masdar-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Masdar City<\/a> \u2014 the City Sand Tower offers a provocative alternative.<\/p>\n<p>While the project\u2019s realization remains farfetched \u2014 the projected start date is 2025, with construction phased over the following five decades \u2014 it should offer urban theorists plenty of food for thought in the meantime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There has been much talk recently about the challenges posed by an exploding global population and the rapid urbanization of precious land all over the world.
