{"id":117,"date":"2017-02-10T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-10T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/architizer.wpengine.com\/dear-architect-students-you-have-a-problem\/"},"modified":"2022-05-31T07:34:36","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T11:34:36","slug":"dear-architect-students-you-have-a-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/practice\/details\/dear-architect-students-you-have-a-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Dear Architecture Students: You Have a Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shock, horror: A <a href=\"http:\/\/thetab.com\/us\/2017\/02\/06\/ranked-majors-work-hardest-59673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> conducted by Indiana University<a href=\"http:\/\/nsse.indiana.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/a> has revealed that architecture students study for more hours each week than any other major.<\/p>\n<p>According to the University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/nsse.indiana.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national survey of student engagement<\/a>, the average of 22.2 study hours includes \u201ctime spent in a week preparing for class including homework\u201d \u2014 for aspiring architects, this includes the hours spent working on projects in studio, writing papers and, presumably, complaining about how little sleep they are getting. The weekly grind for architecture students beats out some serious academic contenders, including majors in chemical engineering, physics and neuroscience.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I know what you\u2019re all thinking: Tell us something we don\u2019t already know! However, the unsurprising nature of Indiana University\u2019s \u201crevelation\u201d is part of the problem. However, from the perspective of someone who has lived through this experience, one can argue that this romantic notion is nothing of the sort.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, it forms a cover for the fetishization of exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>When you compare the average weekly study hours for the majors listed above with starting salaries typically achieved by graduates, an inconvenient truth emerges. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earnings_for_architects#cite_note-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent data<\/a>, 2015 architecture graduates had an average starting salary of <b>$43,390<\/b>. By contrast, graduates with STEM-related majors (those in science, technology, engineering and math) fared much better. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/s01272016\/stem-grads-earn-highest-starting-salaries.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average starting salary<\/a> for those in an engineering field was <b>$62,998<\/b>. However, the issue outlined above may be reducing the number of talented students ever making it that far, as they seek a more lucrative career path elsewhere. To ensure the profession doesn\u2019t suffer a \u201cbrain drain\u201d to other STEM-related industries, this problem should be attacked on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n<p>First, the unhealthy work ethic so prevalent within the profession \u2014 from the largest firms to the smallest studios \u2014 should be challenged and, ultimately, diminished. There is a plethora of ways to achieve this: through <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/the-end-of-the-all-nighter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulation<\/a>, guidance from the AIA and advocacy from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/616567\/for-and-against-all-nighter-culture-archdaily-readers-respond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">influential writers and commentators<\/a> within creative fields.<\/p>\n<p>Most of all, though, architecture professors have the power to affect change. Some <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/firms\/big-bjarke-ingels-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more notable architecture firms<\/a> are highly adept at marketing themselves, but many struggle to compete against commercial developers who utilize draftsmen and -women to cram pre-designed <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/failed-architecture-suburban-housing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cookie-cutter housing<\/a> into tightly packed plots. Struggling firms have reacted to this trend by lowering their profit margins and offering increasingly meager salaries just to stay afloat.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways in which the profession could begin to rectify this; a number of different opinions on the subject have been published on Architizer in recent months. For instance, Lidija Grozdanic\u2019s feature on <a href=\"http:\/\/architizer.com\/blog\/new-business-models-for-architects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new business models for architects<\/a> outlines ways that the profession can diversify its income streams. For him, this leads to more serious clients, less speculative work and a greater ability to design creative, ambitious projects. Significantly, this fee increase did not lead to a depreciation in the amount of work coming in \u2014 the quality of Eerlings\u2019 work was enough to justify this increase, and he believes the profession as a whole is undervaluing itself.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the solution is simple \u2014 as a profession, we need to value ourselves more.
