As the sprawling entrance steps guide you up to the entrance from the aptly named Calle de Antonio Gaudi, it is immediately clear that you are about to enter a unique architectural project. The building, nicknamed the \u201cCathedral of Faith\u201d, dominates the surrounding landscape, with a 125-foot tall cupola that is visible throughout the region. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cathedral of Justo Gallego is a vision of recycled materials that straddles the line between a medieval ruin, salvage yard and architectural masterpiece. Its creator and sole occupant, Justo Gallego, recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/08\/world\/europe\/justo-gallego-dead.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the age of 96, leaving behind an ongoing project that has animated the local community, turned the area into a tourist attraction and garnered International attention over the course of the last half-century.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112238\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112238\" class=\"size-large wp-image-112238 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17-1024x714.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17-1024x714.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17-768x535.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17-400x279.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/don-justo-17.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-112238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a9 Michael Piderit<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justo Gallego Mart\u00ednez was born into an agricultural family in Mejorada del Campo on Sept. 20, 1925. At age 27, he joined a Trappist monastery in the Northern province of Soria, but was ordered to leave eight years later after he contracted tuberculosis and risked contaminating the other monks. Fellow acquaintances from this period in his life, including one monk in particular who studied with Justo, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yQGAsikORI4&amp;t=1s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recall him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as someone who \u201cfasted and worked too hard,\u201d adding that the other brothers \u201cwere worried about his health\u2014above all, his mental health.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After recovering from tuberculosis in a Madrid hospital, Justo returned to his hometown and decided to turn his family\u2019s agricultural plot into a place of worship. Catalyzed by his desire to thank God for helping him survive his illness,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justo began to lay the first stones in 1961<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He viewed his work as an act of faith to help return religious architecture to a classicist style based on the spiritual harmony and proportion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People in the village thought he was crazy: How could a man with so little education and so few means construct an entire cathedral from scratch by himself? \u201cEl loco de la catedral,\u201d they called him, thoroughly convinced that he\u2019d fail.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112233\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112233\" class=\"size-large wp-image-112233 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/009-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-112233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a9 Michael Piderit<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In defiance of public opinion, Justo toiled tirelessly and mostly alone to construct a cathedral complex without any architectural drawings or overall design over the course of the next 60 years. What slowly rose from the building site surprised everyone in the community. Constructed from mostly salvaged materials, the 50,590 square foot (4700 square meter) complex grew over time to contain a crypt, two cloisters, 12 towers and 28 cupolas. Decorative elements throughout the spaces utilized old tires, ceramic shards and empty metal cans. Cracked bricks and exposed metal rebar were re-interpreted as makeshift design details, giving the interior environment a precarious, raw aesthetic that creates a visual link to the materials donated over time from surrounding factories and building sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justo believed in using recycled materials to build his vision, incidentally engaging in a very organic process of makeshift architectural design. As certain materials would arrive on site, his vision of each particular element of the construction would evolve. Using old car tires, bicycle wheels, unwanted materials and bricks, he effectively acted as a one man salvage yard, giving otherwise unused materials a new lease on life. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In stark contrast to the architectural profession\u2019s propensity for planning, which can constrict the spontaneous creativity of the design process, Justo\u2019s reactive design methodology stimulated a circular economy within the region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112225\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112225\" class=\"size-large wp-image-112225 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/001-2-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-112225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a9 Michael Piderit<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justo argued that his religious faith and determination made up for his lack of architectural training or engineering skills \u2014 his only machinery was a winch to raise stone blocks and planks \u2014 and he was unfazed by those who criticized his project as that of an eccentric monk. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe only plan is made in my head, drawn day by day,\u201d he said. While initially widely critiqued on the grounds that the project was dangerous and being executed without proper planning permission,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the local Spanish authorities ignored its existence, with neither the town council of Mejorada del Campo nor the Catholic Church wanting to take responsibility.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, Justo grew to become an inspirational figure within the community, recalling the history of another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sagradafamilia.org\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfinished religious structure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Spain that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has long split opinion among its residents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_112240\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112240\" class=\"size-large wp-image-112240 lazy lazy_media_item\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.architizer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/008-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-112240\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a9 Michael Piderit<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was lucky enough to visit the Cathedral back in 2018 when Justo was still alive and at work. As we wandered through the vast spaces taking care to watch our step, I caught glimpses of Justo moving through areas of varied completion in a contemplative manner. We were aware of one another\u2019s presence and he welcomed us to look around upon our arrival, but we treaded lightly as visitors, careful not to disturb his work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As our tour wore on, Justo suddenly appeared and motioned us to follow him down a flight of stairs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We entered a poorly lit subterranean room, with dark plastered walls adorned with odd, spherical paper m\u00e2ch\u00e9<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ornamentation on the walls. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond a sea of cement bags, scattered tools and paint buckets, there was a long, deep rectangular hole cut into the earth. A modest wooden crucifix hung above it and a shovel lay on the ground<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where Justo hoped to be laid, his self-made crypt, once he could no longer continue to build. Following his death in late 2021, town officials said they could not respect that wish after finding that the crypt did not meet Spanish sanitary rules. But to criticize the project on this front may be missing the point altogether. While Justo\u2019s creation may never operate as an active place of communal worship, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one cannot help but marvel at the singular drive of one man, whose faith emphasizes the notion that we are all works in progress, constantly striving to improve ourselves and the spaces we wish to be in.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One person in particular was taken with Justo\u2019s mission. Upon his death, the cathedral was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/madrid\/2021\/11\/08\/61882900e4d4d8ba748b45fa.html?utm_content=catedral-justo&amp;utm_source=madridsecreto&amp;utm_medium=post&amp;utm_term=cta1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donated to Father \u00c1ngel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, president of Mensajeros de la Paz, who intends to finish the project in order to pay homage to Justo\u2019s life. In a recent turn of fate, a structural engineering firm that Father Angel hired deemed the building safe and structurally sound, bolstering its chances of completion. The Cathedral of Justo Gallego raises important questions surrounding what it means to complete a project, and reinforces the importance of the journey over the destination. It took a single man\u2019s singular, determined focus to block out the noise of the architecture and religious communities in pursuit of his truth. Whether or not it eventually becomes a recognized place of worship, Justo\u2019s perseverance serves as a lesson to us all &#8211; that we are all works in progress, striving to do the best with what we have.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/enter.architizer.com\/?utm_source=architizer&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=nav\"><i>Architizer's 14th A+Awards<\/i><\/a><\/span><i> judging is live!
