Discover a Dynamic Boathouse Reflecting the Openness of the Rowing Organization It Houses

Community Rowing, Inc. (CRI) is the largest public rowing organization in the United States. Having never had a permanent home, the organization envisioned that their new headquarters would architecturally express their ethos of openness and accessibility. The site is located on the Charles River, who shores are dotted with historic boathouses, and anchored at an ideal junction, where the river, an urban park system, bike paths, and local roads converge. In response to this context, AW designed a facility that establishes a contemporary bookend, yet whose materiality and building materials express the dynamism and openness of the organization it houses.

AW-ARCH is a research-driven practice focusing on design and construction innovation, and a finalist in the Best Medium Firm (11-49 employees) category at the 10th Annual A+Awards. Based in Cambridge, MA, AW-ARCH strives to engage the public realm in ways that speak to diverse audiences. The firm embraces the specific, complex, and often contradictory conditions of a project, resulting in work that defies easy classification – but that is always seeking to inspire, educate and enhance the experience of everyday life.
