Text description provided by the architects.

The Library is done by Danish architects COBE and TRANSFORM in collaboration with Wessberg engineers, Schönherr landscape architects and contractor Bdr. A&B Andersen. The Library is both a modernization of an existing culture house, a merger of two libraries, and an addition of a new concert hall. The Library is located in the Northwestern area of Copenhagen – a diverse and multi-ethnic area that, due to numerous entry roads and the lack of cultural facilities and recreational areas, is mainly passed through going in and out of the city by car.

The Library makes up the missing link for the area, being a significant and attractive cultural institution placed centrally in the neighbourhood’s awareness. The goal was to create a space that is more than just a place you go to find books – the building also works as a village hall, a community center and an urban space uniting the neighborhood – an urban livingroom.

To ensure a sense of community, local users and employees have participated in workshops throughout the process, contributing with opinions and ideas – for instance, the location of the concert hall at the top of the building.
The building consists of 4 golden boxes displaced on top of each other, like a stack of books.

At ground floor, there is a children’s library, then a youth library, a library for adults and on top, a concert hall. The different volumes are connected with staircases and the space between the boxes is multi-purpose areas.
Three democratic principles – openness, accessibility and transparency – have been at the core of the solution.

The building has entrances from both north and south, making the foyer act as an urban passage for the neighbourhood. The building is designed to be including, welcoming and act as a platform for dialogue. Team:Architects: COBE and TRANSFORMLandscape architects: SchönherrEngineers: WessbergContractors: Bdr.
