An Emporium of the Imagination:
The Kings Square – FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out/ Fremantle On My own)

The design seeks to breathe new life into an old piece of the port city of Fremantle in Western Australia; threading and weaving itself through an ancient structure yet expressing a new layer of activation – a new ground plane that becomes a catalyst for the surrounding precinct.

The design intent behind it is to spark dialogue and invite interaction both within Fremantle and with its surroundings. The result is an unconventional permeable lifestyle destination integrated with cultural and commercial activities that seamlessly mesh to bring the community together.

The project weaves together art, architecture, culture, retail and food in an open and borderless destination reflective of the ‘heartbeat’ of Fremantle.

Open planes of sight and an organic, free-flowing experience replaces the traditional delineation between retail mix. Open spaces offer numerous opportunities for sitting, walking, engaging and exploring, with an emphasis on the journey being as important as the destination. A meandering path of discovery through food concepts through slow food, good food, fast and fresh food, before morphing into homewares, apparel and handmade, the ordinary, daily, made extraordinary.

Public space, private space, inside, outside; the magic happens in the in between!

With its focus on redeveloping the former Myer buildings, the project is set to bring the heart of Fremantle back to life and serve as a game changer for the retail landscape in the wider metropolitan context of the Western Australian capital city of Perth.
