Some years ago, the ever-whimsical luminaire designer Ingo Maurer developed a lighting product of a different sort. Instead of a chandelier made to resemble birds in a tree or floating circuit-board strips, the simply named LED Wallpaper was a non-woven covering with integrated LEDs creating a field of isometric shapes.

Since then, niche brands have been coming up with even more sophisticated wall coverings that incorporate lighting elements. There’s the London-based design company Meystyle, for instance, who began exploring this with area in 2004 by combining bold patterns with LEDs as well as crystals.

Meystyle’s wide variety of dramatic illuminated wall coverings range from more intricate diode patterns to works of art with a bedazzled appearance. Interstellar, for one, is a modern take on a sunburst or starburst motif, while Maps presents an abstracted aerial view of a city.

Other offerings include geometric, retro and somewhat psychedelic patterns, nature-inspired and organic murals, silhouettes that depict light and shadow play, flocked patterns, color fields and faux light pendant and chandelier murals.

A newer product line developed by Elon Technologies and Xtend Design London takes illuminated wallpaper to a level beyond the bedazzled and Lite-Brite diode look. Lighting Wallpapers utilizes thin laminated foil to emit beautiful electroluminescent patterns.

Currently there are seven eye-catching designs available, all of which are formed by paneled sections that connect via double-sided copper stickers.

The panels range in thickness from 0.5 to 2 millimeters and come in three formats: 50 centimeters square, 50 by 100 centimeters and 100 centimeters square. The patterns stay cool to the touch and, best of all, consume a mere 100 watts per square meter of lighting area.
