Fast Five: 5 Stylish Drains

Sheila Kim

For the detail-oriented set, handsome bathroom fittings and hardware are like jewelry for the bath space. But even the oblivious occupant can get the sense that a bath is special or more luxurious from minute touches. One such detail that can make an impact is often found right under one’s bare foot: the utilitarian drain cover.

Decorative, sometimes intricately designed drain covers are increasingly popping up in residential and hospitality showers or tubs as well as in spa settings and locker-room and public-restroom floors. (Even star industrial designer Marc Newson has created a drain collection for Long Island, N.Y.-based Infinity Drain). Round, square, linear, traditional, modern, ornate, or minimal … there’s a shape and style for every space, now. Here are five lines to consider.

Watermark’s linear shower drains

Watermark Designs: Linear Shower Drains
Brooklyn-based fixture manufacturer Watermark teamed up with Easy Drain, a leader in drainage systems for barrier-free showers, on a new linear shower drain collection that utilizes Easy Drain’s patented Water Protection System. Ensuring a 100-percent watertight installation, the sealing system is topped with a solid brass grate offered in four designs, seven lengths (of up to 48 inches), and 40 finishes. The ADA-compliant product features height-adjustable support legs that allow for easy leveling.

An oval-shaped series by Designer Drains.

Designer Drains: Oval Drain
A departure from the conventional square, round, or channel cover, this product boasts an oval shape that gives off an elegant vibe. Measuring 7.5 by 5.5 inches, the cover is constructed of polished stainless steel that has been cast and CNC-machined. Several patterns are offered, and both the decorative cover and throat of this drain are manufactured in the United States, out of California.

Infinity Drain’s G Series

Infinity Drain: G Series
The aforementioned company that collaborated with Marc Newson continues to produce innovative drains that are not only attractive, but also low-maintenance. The G Series, for instance, uses strong, corrosion-resistant nickel magnets as opposed to screws, making it super easy to remove when cleaning or servicing is needed. The four cover patterns in the series are transitional in style and are offered in satin or polished stainless steel, or oil-rubbed bronze finish, to complement a wide range of projects. G Series is suitable for both residential and commercial applications.

Tile Redi’s drain grates

Tile Redi: Designer Drain Grates
Sporting a fun circle pattern, these drain grates come in a 4.25-inch-diameter round or 4.25-inch-wide and -long square format. The round version can also be paired with a square trim for a different aesthetic. The covers are offered in brushed nickel, polished chrome, or oil-rubbed bronze finish.
