In August 2016, Brick & Wonder partnered with Ravi Kantha of Leslie J. Garfield to develop a case study around a historically significant townhouse for sale in Brooklyn Heights. Formerly a single-family home, the townhouse had been subdivided into single occupancy units and fallen into disrepair. Its condition was preventing potential home buyers from seeing the rich heritage of the building, and its future potential.
Through an architectural approach, Brick & Wonder helped create a new vision for the interior space. Working closely with a diverse and creative project team, including Lang Architecture, an interior stylist, an architectural photographer and a writer, the team crafted a compelling visual story for the property. Carefully selected furnishings were photographed in the parlor living room and master bedroom. The photos were then edited, restoring flooring, ceilings, moldings, windows and other elements to their original condition.
An original carved-wood avignon staircase was also digitally restored. It is one of the most extraordinary elements of the space, winding through all five floors, and is naturally lit by a central skylight. The home was also lacking in a key element — the kitchen — a focal point home buyers often gravitate toward. Using composite photography and architectural rendering, the creative team envisioned what a garden level kitchen could offer.
In the approved renovation plans (included in the purchase price of the property), the architectural team has restored the original single-family home while preserving its most elegant details. The composite renderings alongside original photographs provide a unique ‘before and after’ presentation in line with the architectural plans. The case study for 154 Hicks shows how thoughtful visualization of a property can help potential home owners envision their lives in a particular space. Leslie J.
