“Black Flying House” Might Be the Creepiest Piece of Architecture Ever Built

Warning: This floating cabin might unleash your childhood fears.

Black Flying House by H3T architeckti might just be the creepiest piece of architecture ever built — and the most surprising. Suspended under the arch of an old railway bridge, the tiny house hovers above ground, bewildering any passersby who stumble upon it.

The design of the house is minimal and succinct. Its black wooden exterior blends into the surrounding forest and the architecture of the bridge. Even the sharp pointed roof adds a tone of suspense to the structure.

Inside the mysterious floating cabin is a simple living room complete with a stove and sleeping loft lit by a single window. It is accessible via a ladder that has been purposefully hidden from sight. With no context or explanation, visitors who discover the project, find the ladder and are brave enough to climb up it will still have little understanding of its purpose. But maybe that’s the point.

The project is actually an installation set just outside of the Czech city of Pardubice. It can be reached in as little as a 15-minute walk. According to the architects, Black Flying House was designed to recreate the mysterious atmosphere of a military complex.

H3T architeckti is known for designing temporary objects in unexpected contexts. These projects are meant to function as public exhibition spaces. Since January, their latest design — a mismatched wooden sauna with blue and green plexiglass-like material — has sat outside the Galerie Jaroslava Fragnera in Prague.
