Herzog & de Meuron’s highly anticipated Elbphilharmonie concert hall opens today with its inaugural concert in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg, Germany. The Swiss firm’s construction sits atop an old warehouse building and dock ground on the Elbe River.

Prior to this grand opening, the design team released an extraordinary interactive drone video that allows users an experiential look at the building at two different speeds and zoom span using the space bar. The drone footage takes viewers through a tour up the curving tube escalators, plaza spaces, connecting foyers and finally, into the grand hall where the two drones gradually make dramatic landfall back down to the concert stage.

This innovative format serves up a duality of close-up shots that give viewers a clear sense of the spatial experience of the building while offering an understanding of the building in relation to its context. Other key features are the vantage points the video gives viewers, as the drones capture an inside-outside view of the Elbphilharmonie and the Elbe River in a single, continuous shot.
