Winners of the Fifth Annual CID Awards Announced

Sheila Kim

From a park stairway in San Francisco with an almost lenticular effect to a beautifully minimal gray ghost of a house in Italy, 15 projects were recognized last week for their outstanding use of tile or stone. Each was honored in the fifth annual Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Awards, which took place in Chicago on opening night of the premier North American show Coverings and distributed a total of $20,000 in monetary prizes.

“The entries received for the 2016 CID Awards program were impressive and illustrative of the incredible range of creative and technical talents found in the tile and stone industry,” said Karin Fendrich, the show’s director.

The competition jury — comprising industry writers, leading designers, installation professionals and representatives from Ceramics of Italy, the Tile Council of North America, Tile of Spain and National Tile Contractors Association — participated in a blind judging format to rate each entry on technical execution and original or inspired use of materials.

Two Grand Prize winners, one for stone and the other for tile, were selected. The Stone Grand Prize went to Carson Guest and Marmi Natural Stone for their work on the Farley Residence in Duluth, Georgia. This complete renovation of a traditional home incorporated marble, limestone, onyx and quartzite in applications ranging from a bookmarked marble focal wall and fireplace surround and mantle to custom bathroom sink vanities.

Meanwhile, the Tile Grand Prize went to Doty Tile, Snyder Tile and Aileen Barr for the aforementioned stairway project in Lincoln Park, San Francisco. Artist, architect and installers collaborated to revive this long-neglected stairway, cladding the step risers as well as concrete benches and pillar faces in custom handmade tiles by Barr as well as tiles sourced from Fireclay, Dal Tile and Heath Ceramics.

In addition to the grand prizes, winners were selected in 13 other categories for design or installation, including a new category of “Scouting Shots” to honor an entry featuring amateur photography.
