Mind = Blown: Go with the Flow in This Dizzying Must-See Hyperlapse of Dubai

The Angry Architect

If the stratospheric rise of Dubai from desert city to mega-metropolis wasn’t already head-spinning enough for you, try watching this truly frenetic fly-through, the latest creation by filmmaker and time-lapse wizard Rob Whitworth.

Unsurprisingly, this work of awe-inducing madness comes from the same videographer who gave us the most epic tour through Catalonia with his movie Barcelona GO! This time, we fly in to Dubai’s bustling airport, plummet through the heart of the world’s tallest building, ride a dune buggy across the desert, witness the construction of the twisting Cayan Tower and skydive above the Palm Islands… all in three exhilaratingly turbulent minutes.

Each split-second scene in the movie took a shockingly large amount of time and effort to produce; for instance, the airport carousel scene required three cameras for a 12-second sequence — “One strapped to the baggage cart that was sent out to meet the arriving Airbus A330, one mounted to the suitcase to follow its unloading process, and one with Whitworth to follow the businessman.” Phew.

It’s a detailed demonstration of what is possible with generous helpings of talent, dedication and a jaw-dropping amount of time — and paints a fitting portrait of a city addicted to unrelenting development in its bid to become the quintessential utopian metropolis.

Impressive stuff indeed — even if it does mean you need to sit still in a darkened room to recover after watching…

Yours frenetically,
