15 Projects Snag the Copper in Architecture Awards

Sheila Kim

Whether it’s due to client tastes or fear of upkeep, copper isn’t typically the first go-to metal for the built environment. Yet its beauty — in both gleaming new and patinated states — is unmatched and can add unique character to a project. For the past nine years, the Copper Development Association and Canadian Copper and Brass Development Association have been recognizing some of these exemplary projects with the North American Copper in Architecture Awards. Now in its 10th year, the program has returned and named 15 winners for 2017.

Boston Private Residence

From civic to residential projects, and traditional to contemporary designs, the winners truly demonstrate how the material works with any style of architecture and in a range of contexts as well as in a variety of applications from wall cladding and roofing to ornamentation. There’s the multi-unit 210 Pacific Street apartment building in Brooklyn, New York, for instance, which sports a façade of press-metal units that evoke traditional brick masonry, but with sheen. Meanwhile, in Ottawa, Ontario, the Centre Block — or main building — of the Canadian Parliament complex boasts restored copper roofing and exterior ornamentation that retains the original Gothic Revival style.

“The outstanding quality and ingenuity of the copper projects submitted over the past 10 years is truly inspiring,” said Stephen Knapp, director of the Sheet, Strip & Plate Council for the CDA in a statement. “Not only is copper known for its sustainability and durability, its innate beauty continues to make it an appealing building material.”

A panel of architectural and copper industry professionals evaluated entries on overall building design, integration of copper, craft of copper installation and excellence in innovation or historic restoration. Scroll down to view all of the winners:
